Can someone explain or give me a step by step on how to upgrade this CPU? I understand i have to update BIOS, do I change the cpu first? What setting should I put into the BIOS after the update? The videos I’ve seen kinda confuse me so any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Update BIOS to latest version first. Remove old CPU and install new CPU. Enable XMP in the BIOS. Should be all you need for a normal setup.

To that end, if I enter the bios, there is no visible update bios option anywhere.

I'm almost done getting all the parts I need to build my first PC. In particular, I got a Ryzen 9 5900x and an MSI B550 motherboard. The manufacturer says they're compatible so long as I upgrade the BIOS.
How do I get this done when everything is fresh out of the box? It made it clear the system isn't going to POST without this update, will I be able to install the update on a USB drive and install it just like an OS on boot? Or will I actually need a whole other CPU to get my motherboard updated?

You will need a USB thumbdrive and the ability to reformat it and download the bios update to it. Once you have that you can update the bios on the mobo without any cpu. Format the thumbdrive to fat32, MBR partitioning. Download the bios update, rename the bios file to 'MSI.ROM' and drop it on the root of the newly formatted thumbdrive. (With no cpu installed in the mobo) press the bios flash button on the IO panel of your motherboard (near the usb ports usually). Wait like 30 minutes. Interrupting the flash can possibly brick the mobo, so WAIT PATIENTLY. There is a status LED you can watch but it will take at least 5-10 minutes to complete the process. Also, unless you bought the mobo months ago and have just been sitting on it theres a decent chance that it already has an updated bios. EDIT: Make sure you check the manual for your exact motherboard to verify these instructions. I'm not sure every single MSI motherboard uses the exact same procedure.
