[SOLVED]

So I want to update my BIOS from F8 to F11 but there are so many different guides out there that I don't know what to do now.. Some guides tell you to rename the file, others use a software for the update and so on.

So here's my question: What's the easiest and safest way to update the (main) Bios?

Thanks for any help in advance!

There is no "safest" way, there can always be complications. That said, here is what works for me since the release of X570 mainboards: Download the new BIOS file and put the unzipped file onto a USB Drive. Then remove the drive from the USB Port Restart your computer and go into BIOS Note down all manual changes you might have made to the BIOS settings... because Load optimized defaults and restart After restart, go into BIOS again, put your USB drive into a USB Port and update with the Q-Flash utility in BIOS After restart, go into BIOS again, Load optimized defaults again and restart After that last restart, go into BIOS again, change all your settings you might have made before the update and save+exit

The safest way is to do it from within the BIOS and don't use apps or software in Windows to do it. It's just another point of potential failure imo. Go to Gigabyte's website and find your mobo. Hit support, BIOS, download the latest BIOS (if it has a lower case letter at the end it is a beta BIOS. F33 is official F33h is beta for example). It will list all BIOS updates over time and occasionally you may need to install a previous update to get the latest update to work properly. If this is the case tho it will say so in the notes/description of the BIOS version you're looking at. Grab a usb thumb drive. Format it to FAT32. Right click the thumb drive from your file manager and select quick format for FAT32. Put the BIOS you want to install on the usb drive. You do not have to rename it unless you are using the qflash button on the mobo with no CPU installed. (The reason for this is some mobos are not compatible with the latest CPUs out of the box. You would have to update the BIOS first to get newer CPUs to work on the mobo.) Anyway just copy the BIOS over to the usb as is. Keep the USB drive plugged in, reboot and enter the BIOS - usually you press the 'del' key as your rig is booting and before it starts to load Windows. On the BIOS page there should be an option for QFLASH. Go in there, select your USB drive and find your BIOS file. Installation will take about 3 minutes. Make sure you don't lose power during this time. Reboot. Go into Windows and tada you're -almost- done. Reboot again and go back into the BIOS. You need to turn on XMP for your memory to be at the rated speeds you paid for. If you changed your fan profiles in the past you'll have to do it again after updating the BIOS. You can do it from within the BIOS and if it looks confusing, just look up some videos. I prefer a flat fan curve vs a rounded one so that my fans don't ramp up and down constantly as Ryzen CPU's can spike in temps pretty fast. Now you're done. The whole process shouldn't take longer than 5ish minutes. Typing this up probably took me longer. Edit: oops. I forgot to add you'll want to download the latest chipset driver from the manufacturer. So if you have an AMD mobo go to AMD Drivers/Support, find your chipset (X570 or B550, etc) and download from there. Similar for Intel but their chipsets are named differently like Z390 or whatever.

Aside from Q-flash, what is an easy way to do so inside Windows 10?

Their docs that come up as the first result on Google search are outdated, and outright direct you to non-existent 404 pages when you try to access the @BIOS tool they advertise.

Then I also just got Gigabyte Control Center, but it told me there's no BIOS update. I just got Z790 Gaming X AX rev 1.0 and I wanna double check if there's a newer BIOS for it, because I feel like my start ups after setting XMP Profile 1 are taking so much longer than normal.

EDIT:

Thank you all for the responses, I did end up using Q-flash from the BIOS. Here are a few important steps I did in case someone is trying to do the same thing:

  • You can find the latest BIOS files for your specific model of your motherboard on their website in the Support tab. If you try to search for this information on Google or what not, you may find some outdated information on their website, do not follow it!

  • Prepare a USB drive and format it with FAT32. Unzip the files from the BIOS you downloaded and copy it to the USB drive.

  • Insert the USB drive in the rear USB slot that says "BIOS" or "Q-flash" depending on the motherboard.

  • Restart PC and either go into Q-flash mode by pressing END or you can access it via BIOS (DEL).

  • Follow instructions.

  • It will take some time to finish and PC will restart a few times. PLEASE NOTE, BIOS settings will all reset, so you will have to go back in to re-enable XMP, etc. In my case bootable devices were not found again, so make sure you enable CSM support and enable UEFI instead of Legacy, that will show all your drives again.

Hello, I have a Aorus Z790 Elite AX Ice with an i9 14900k on its way.

I've seen tons of people saying they had issues with 13th and 14th gen. Will I have to update the bios of my Mobo or does it already come updated (from I suppose the last batch) if it's not updated, how can I check if it's up to date? Can I start the motherboard without the CPU in it to update it ? Or do I have to put the cpu even though it's "risky"?

That's a lot of questions but I'm kinda worried about it

Looking forward for any answers

I was wondering if I should update my system BIOS, I’ve been having some problems with my PC recently such as random crashes in game and CPU usage hitting 100% then crashing. Along with several freezes throughout the day too. I read that you shouldn’t update BIOS if you don’t need to since something can go wrong and break the motherboard. I only remember seeing crashes after upgrading my graphics card & getting a second monitor, but I’ve tried updating everything else and it keeps happening. CPU idle temps 40C

r/gigabyte on Reddit: Bios - to update or not?

I have a pc that's just over a year old and built on the Z790 Aorus Elite X WiFi7 1.0 mobo, which has the older F4 bios installed. I posted the system specs & some logs in another forum trying to get an issue resolved (done) and someone commented that the Bios version was out of date and I should consider updating it.

I've got a few questions.

Firstly, should I be even considering updating the bios? The GB mobo page says the current version is F10. Over the 40+ years I've been working with pcs my philosophy with Bios has matched the warning on the mobo page, "Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS." Most changes can be easily reversed if they fail, but updating Bios can totally brick the pc. F4 is working, although how one could tell if there are problems a bios upgrade would fix is another matter - as distinct from errors caused by other things.

Secondly, if I do update the bios, what version should I update it to? Current on the mobo webpage is F10, but the person who suggested updating it said to update to F7.

Finally, if I do update the bios, can I make a backup of the current bios (how?) in case the update goes bad and I need to restore it (how?) and can someone point me to a guide as to how to do the update itself. Both the guy who made the update recommendation and the guy who custom built the pc for me both said not to use the Bios update facility in GCC but to do it from a USB stick.

It looks like from the website there's either q-flash using a usb stick, or an @bios utility that is windows-based. Is either better than the other, or safer?

My board is arriving tomorrow and I'm trying to figure out whether I will flash first or do it afterwards.

r/gigabyte on Reddit: update bios or install windows first?
February 1, 2024 -

hello! i just had a question regarding the steps i should take right after installing all the parts within my pc. i’m building my first pc soon, and i feel like i haven’t really touched on knowing what to do before and first the first boot. i’ve never done this before so i want to make sure i do everything correctly.

one of my main questions is, should i first update my bios with a flash drive by downloading the update on a separate computer? or should i be downloading windows first? i have a gigabyte z790 aorus pro x paired with an i7 14700k and on the box it says it’s optimized for 14th gen cpus. i heard updating the bios is a good thing to do, but not needed and has some potential risks.

my second question is what should i be doing after? do i need to tweak any bios settings? when should i enable XMP? i forgot where i heard it but i need to wait to enable XMP until everything is fully set up to prevent instability(?)

i just want to know the gist of what i should be doing after i finish installing the parts in so i can make sure to take the proper steps and not limit my performance by missing something. thank you all so much in advance and please let me know!

ps: given i have a z790, i7 14700k and 4070ti super, would you guys recommend windows 10 or 11? i know there are die hard windows 10 fans but personally ive been running 11 on my gaming laptop and i don’t mind it at all, since i never really used 10. i’d still want to know some opinions!

tl;dr what steps should i take before and after booting up my pc? should i update bios first, then install windows, or vice versa, or just install windows only? anything helps!!!

edit: posted here as well bc i only got 1 response from r/buildapc😭
