Stuck on Firmware Update for 2 hours . Help!!
Good news: even if it farks up, Dell will automatically default to the previous known-working BIOS. Their firmware update utility is spotty as hell and always has been, so just go to the product support update page for your model and download all known current updates one at a time as individual installation files; you're always better off doing the BIOS update separately by itself in-between reboots anyway, and you can manually suspend BitLocker, which I recommend doing from PowerShell and immediately before running the standalone installer. You can even set it up to leave BitLocker off until you manually turn it back on from CLI again when done, solves a world of problems. Give it another hour and if it still doesn't snap out of it just do the hard power cycle and hope for the best; Dells rarely brick over a borked BIOS install anymore. More on reddit.com

How long should SupportAssist BIOS update take normally? | DELL Technologies
March 3, 2021 - It should not take several hours to update the BIOS. I would not recommend using SupportAssist for updating the BIOS. At the very least, use the Dell Update program, but the preferred method can be found in this topic.

m17 R3, BIOS update taking forever | DELL Technologies
December 15, 2020 - After a good 45 minutes of watching it just "spin", I clicked the Cancel button, which caused the updater to change to indicate that it was cancelling, but it still just kept "spinning". Eventually, however, it seemed to complete the "canceling" process, and I was able to start the update again once I got the computer home. It again found the BIOS update (along with one other update) and started downloading/installing.

Dell BIOS Update taking Waaaaay too long? - DoItYourself.com Community Forums
March 19, 2019 - There's no "progress bar" just a "twirling clock" to indicate progress, and my question is, should it take this long, or is it stuck in an "endless loop"? ... Eh, difficult situation- A) You really DO NOT want to restart or interrupt a BIOS update. B) I've NEVER heard of a BIOS update flashing a warning, OR actually running in the background, it is usually download, then re-boot and it installs. I'd go DIRECTLY to the Dell website and download the newest BIOS update

Perhaps the dell support retire this corrupted bios on the website.

Please try performing a Hard Reset: 1. Disconnect any external devices including the AC adapter (and battery if possible) 2. Hold the power button down for 20~30 seconds 3. Bypass any power strips, surge protectors or battery backups 4. Verify the wall outlet is functional 5. Plug only the AC adapter/battery back into the laptop 6. Attempt to power on the system and finish the update. If that does not solved the issue, proceed to the next step. 1. Remove the AC adaptor and wait for the battery to drain completely (it can take minutes or hours depending on the battery level). 2. After the battery drained completely, connect the AC adapter back and press the Power button for 25 to 40 seconds until the battery charging LED blinks twice and then the release power button. 3. Once that is done, check if the update was complete and you have the new BIOS installed.

September 16, 2024 - Dell came out and replaced the mobo, and exact same issue with the new one--the tech eventually had to use BIOS recovery mode to get it updated. It continues to get stuck every time a new BIOS update comes out and can only be updated via BIOS recovery. ... Recent one on a Precision 5520 took 20 minutes. I think I may have skipped one revision before this one. ... Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Make sure you buy a new coin cell cmos battery and install it according to your manual. It's cheap, only $2 or so. That was a good idea not to force a bios update. As long as the computer is running OK don't update the bios unless told to by a support tech at Dell..

This is the third time this happens to me with a brand new, expensive Dell laptop. It seriously affects my workday. Now, I have no way of starting the computer, as it wont power down. Its fans are going loud and there is no progress. Please, can anyone assist with this? What do I do?

Unplug all of your USBs if any plugged in. There's a issue with certain usb devices halting bios upgrades.

Hold the power button down for 10-30 seconds, until it powers down. it should be fine as it hasn't started the update process yet. In the worst case, Dells have a good BIOS recovery function.
