I have a lot of passwords on Dashlane, I've used it for over ten years and cannot afford to pay for premium. What are the pro and cons for Bitwarden? How does it compare to Dashlane? Are there any UI features that you like/want to change? What are some features that are helpful, but seldom used?
Is Bitwarden free?
- Unlimited password storage on unlimited devices.
- Secure notes, credit cards, and identity storage.
- Unlimited password sharing with one user.
- Bitwarden Send for text notes.
- Data breach scanner.
- Password generator.
- 2FA compatibility with TOTP authenticators like Authy and Google Authenticator.
- Biometric login with iOS, Android, and Windows Hello.
Bitwarden Free is pretty good, but I still recommend upgrading to a paid password manager. Bitwarden Premium is a very affordable and secure option. It offers a lot of excellent additional features, like vault auditing, USB-key 2FA compatibility, a built-in TOTP Authenticator, and 1 GB encrypted storage, all for much less than competitors.
Is Bitwarden safe?
Bitwarden’s open-source development means that a ton of cybersecurity experts around the globe have extensively scrutinized it. Many security-minded users stand by Bitwarden as one of the most secure password managers on the market because the Bitwarden community has carefully analyzed every piece of its source code.
Does Bitwarden support passkeys?
I'm planning to move my passwords from Google Password Manager. I realize now that I should have moved sooner, as it's risky to have my passwords stored in Chrome. So far, I have narrowed my choices down to three preferred password managers: Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and 1Password. Which do you think is the best? Can you recommend any others? What has your experience been with them, and have you ever been hacked while using one?
I’ve been a 1password user now for over 5 years. Recently I spun up a vaultwarden instance to give that a try. For the last 2-3 months I’ve been running both side by side and have some take aways:
Bitwardens new app (still in beta) for iOS is great. Way better than their old app. Without this, I don’t know if I’d switch. But it’s phenomenal.
Bitwardens extension is a little clunky, but not bad enough to sway my opinion one way or the other
1password has much better passkey integration. Bitwarden is definitely making progress, but it isn’t there yet.
As far as passwords and autofill goes, they’re the same. Minor ui differences, but I’ve never had an issue with either.
Bitwardens one huge advantage to me, is the ability to create a masked email anywhere. 1password only works in the extension, which to me, is an unacceptable limitation. Bitwarden works in the extension, the app, the web vault, anywhere.
I still have until October next year on a 1password gift card, so I’m going to keep it up until then. I’m likely going to predominantly use 1password until bitwarden updates their autofill system with passkeys and the beta app is fully out. But after that, unless 1password finally lets me create masked emails in the apps, I’ll likely move fully over to bitwarden/vaultwarden.
