Password Generator No Longer Works - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
June 30, 2025 - I am unable to generate passwords in the Chrome extension. I click the icon. I click “Generator”. I have an option of “Password, Passphrase, or Username.” Chosing and option does nothing. In the space where passwords would be generated, I have “-” The regenerate icon is grayed out.

Problem with password generator - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
October 11, 2024 - Default options don’t seem to save for me using the PC app. In fact, it defaults to a single hyphen (-) and i need to go through all the preferences, then refresh to get the new password. I’m 99% of the time doing this from the window where I’m creating a new item, but I just tested the generator on its own and the same thing happens.

r/Bitwarden on Reddit: Password generator not working! Help!
April 17, 2021 -

So, I decided to start using bitwarden today because I thought it would be more secure way of storing passwords.

I just went ahead and changed a few passwords using the generator... now I'm locked out of a few accounts because when re-sign in, the password is invalid. After creating a new password, I updated it in Bitwarden. What the heck is happening?

Thank you.

Password generator popup broken? - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
December 27, 2024 - Creating a new login or changing a password, an autocomplete popup appears giving you the option to use a newly generated random password. Select it, and it correctly fills the password and password confirmation fields, but it does not copy the password to the clipboard, it does not recognize that new login credentials have been generated, and doesn’t track the password in the password generator history, either.

Problems with generating and saving passwords - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
December 15, 2024 - The requested feature has been added; when changing or setting a password I am able to “autofill generated password” in the context menu when the field is focused. However, it’s unusable, because when submitting the autofilled password, it is not added to or updated in the corresponding saved login.

Problem With Generator Settings - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
December 29, 2024 - Hello, could anyone help me? Whenever I sign out of the app, browser extension, or web account, my generator settings reset to 14 characters without special characters. My settings never stay saved. If the app gets locked and then unlocked, the settings remain, but they reset after signing out.

r/Bitwarden on Reddit: I have no idea how to retrieve the password I generated.
September 3, 2024 -

I created an account on my uni's mail thingy and while doing that I used the in-built password generator to create a strong password. Then I tried to save both my username and my password but bitwarden decided to not save my password for some reason. I panicked when I realised that I probably lost the password and I would not be able to retrieve it anymore, Then I looked it up and saw that the password generator history is a thing but after trying all of the passwords generated that day none of them matched the password that I used in my signup. The site also doesn't have a ''I forgot my password'' link so.... am I f**ked?

Browser: Firefox Version 129.0.2 (64 bit)
Bitwarden Version 2024.8.1

The password history is unique for every client. If you generated on the desktop application, it's different from the extension. If you generated in one browser extension, it's different on the extension of another browser. Have you used the history of the client that you generated the password with?

This is one of the reasons why it is better to use the following methods for creating new accounts: Open the browser extension, and click the + icon or the "Add a login" link. Bitwarden will automatically record the website URL, and create an item name based on the domain name. Still in the browser extension, enter your username in the "Username" field. In the browser extension's "Password" field, click 🔄 (which takes you to the Password Generator), then click the "Select" button in the top tight corner (which transfers the generated password to the vault item you are creating). Click the "Save" button in the top right corner (which will save your new vault item). The browser extension will now list the newly created item (in the browser extension's "Tab" view, which is the view that will be shown after saving a new item) — now click once on the listed vault item, which will transfer your new password to the website's account registration form. Submit the website's account registration form. In addition to guaranteeing that you never lose another password, the above method actually requires fewer mouse-clicks and keyboard presses than the method you've been using. It just requires a change of mindset that you save the account information first in Bitwarden, and use autofill to complete the registration form second (rather than the other way around).

Context menu password generation ignores parameters - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
November 10, 2024 - Hi there 🙂 First of all, the issue : When generating a new password using the context menu or the option that sometimes pop under a password field, the generated password uses the default parameters (password, 14 chars, etc.). I’ve been to the Bitwarden extension, clicked the Generator menu at the bottom, and changed the option for "passphrase, 4 word, cap words and addnumber).

Password generator is now limited to 30 characters - Password Manager - Bitwarden Community Forums
February 12, 2025 - I use 64-character passwords. I can no longer generate them in the Bitwarden Firefox plugin. The generator now maxes out at 30 characters. Yet again, a perfectly mature Bitwarden, which should never have been changed, was absolutely destroyed by the recent updates.
