Bitwarden also allows you to sync your passwords on all of your devices. It also enables greater micromanagement for every single account and password. As one of the most popular and most commonly self-hosted password manager options, it’s interesting to note that Bitwarden is free.

r/Bitwarden on Reddit: What's the point of self-hosting rather than using bitwarden servers?
May 30, 2022 -
So I just started using bitwarden on linux, mainly because I'm an open-source guy, but I thought it was just a server-side app where you could connect to and get your info, but if bitwarden provides a hosting service for no cost, what's the point of self-hosting bitwarden? I personally don't see any upgrade, but please prove me wrong.
Thanks

For corporate environments, it means keeping corporate secrets inside the their borders, while also having the ability to lock down access to VPN and tie together with LDAP/AD. For end users, you're better off using Bitwarden's cloud.

Self hosting is a great proof of concept, but I think people who self host are deluding themselves. You won't get four nines of uptime like Bitwarden does; your Internet and power aren't that reliable. You won't have 24x7 data center support, even when you are not at home. You won't get the same level of backups and disk mirroring as a data center. You won't get the same level of security against zeroday flaws in your containers, hypervisors, and infrastructure. Your secrets are no less secure for being hosted at a data center, since Bitwarden is a zero knowledge architecture. I like the fact you CAN self host, but I advise against it if you really need a password manager. EDIT: I understand some people need FEDRAMP compliance. That is a special case where your enterprise is already running the equivalent of a data center. But for the rest of us...nah, don't do it.
