The series was announced in January 2021, and production began April 2021 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Mogwai's involvement in the series was announced back in May. With top talent behind the camera including writing by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone) a soundtrack by Mogwai, and the actors Taron Egerton, Ray Liotta, & Paul Walter Hauser, the series promises good, gritty drama. The series has already been given a 96% on the Tomatometer, as well as an 82 from Metacritic.
Of note, this is the last TV series performance from Ray Liotta who passed away on May 26, 2022 at 67 years old. There are still several movies that he was attached to which have not been released yet.
A synopsis of the series:
Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.
The series is based on the 2010 autobiographical novel In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene. You can find more information here.

I've been paying for AppleTV for about a year now, which I hadn't realised until recently. I decided to catch up on some of their original series to make up for all i've paid, starting with Black Bird. It was incredible, Paul Walter Hauser's performance as Larry Hall is truly unforgettable/ terrifying. I had kind of sidelined AppleTV, but am looking forward to starting my next show. Severance seems pretty popular, so might start with that. Is their library quality > quantity, or pretty hit and miss?
