Cookouts are a black thing?
When comedians and such say “that’s some black people sh*t” 98% of the time it’s actually something all people living in poverty can relate to. “White people don’t whip their kids” “you dont touch the thermostat in a black persons home” as someone that grew up in the inner city NW part of Roanoke I can assure you poor white people beat their kids and go off if a child in the house touches the thermostat because the electric bill. It would be detrimental to the establishment if poor whites and poor blacks realized they have more in common than not. More on reddit.com
What are your family cookouts like?
I feel like the type of cookout you described is only in movies and stuff haha. All of the ones I've attended - both wholesome and "ghetto" - have been exactly like yours -- throwdown on the grill, blast music, everyone sits around talking. The only time there's been dancing was when there's the members who are absolutely blasted at the end of the night. Even the nice ones get exhausting after a few hours, though I'm not a social butterfly at all so it might be that lol. I do remember seeing skits and the like, but... I feel like they're just that - skits, just like most of the stuff on social media being carefully curated verses what it's like in real life. Overall, I guess I'm just saying to not fret it. The Evolution of Black Cookout Culture: From Family Gatherings to Catered Affairs
July 19, 2024 - We must thank the generations of Black matriarchs and patriarchs who have kept cookouts alive until now. In return, they are served first, pray over the food, and approve who is on the grill (IYKYK). As the new aunties and uncles, it’s up to us now to keep these traditions alive. We often use this space to announce a new job, school selection, or pregnancy or use the opportunity to bring friends and mates to gain approval from family and peers.

I’m a white dude and have a really close friend of 5-6 years from our military days who is black. He always picks on me for my “white person food.” It’s always all in good fun. Anyway he is visiting my wife and I soon and I want to surprise him with some flavorful black food dishes. Any suggestions? Recipes?
Edit: just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave me their input. You guys are truly awesome. I wish I could have everyone here to try everything we make!

I was raised in a soul food rich community in the south. Pig’s feet, tripe, collard greens with fatback, biscuits with cracklings, fried chicken, deviled eggs (but they weren’t called that because the church didn’t do things of Satan,) potato salad, macaroni and cheese, bbq (north carolina and James river style) style: those were church gathering/birthday party/potluck/comfort food items. My advice is to look for soul food based recipes, not “Food Network” recipes that are “inspired by” where they add their own slants to try and update recipes. I’ve seen fights break out where the main subject was someone getting artsy with breaking from family recipes. I should also warn you, tripe has a particular scent when it cooks, you’ll smell it for a week after.

June 19, 2024 - With any luck, the families who share a homemade picnic in the park will recall the artistic spirit and selfless determination of generations of African American cooks who were finally able to decide how they would prepare vegetables and set the time and manner in which the family ate its suppers; they can cheer the restaurateurs who for so long were denied the opportunity to serve. ... The dish we've come to know as warm spinach salad — greens tossed with a hot bacon dressing — wasn't really a salad at all, to hear the Black cookbook authors tell it through the years. Survey the vegetables section of soul food and early 20th century Black cookbooks and look for this uber-popular combination with titles like "wilted" or "killed" lettuce or spinach, or you might miss it.
