Request: advice on a good method for making cutouts in this 2" thick wood counter. I need to make a 6" square cutout and a 5-3/4" round cutout for some plumbing fixtures.

If the cutouts don't need to be pretty (e.g., a sink flange or trim is going to cover the hole), drill holes in the corners and cut it out with a jigsaw or sawzall. For the round cutout, get a big holesaw or just cut the circle with a jigsaw / sawzall. If the cutouts need to be pretty, create a template out of plywood for the shape you're after and use a router with a plunge base and a templating bit. Cut into the surface a bit at a time running the router's bearing on the inside of the template, then when you've run out of depth, remove the template and run the bearing on the surface you've already cut. Should leave a very clean result. More on reddit.com
