I just got an email saying that bluebird will be discontinued in a year. This card has enabled me to do a lot online, and didn't charge a lot in fees. Any recommendations for an alternative? Preferably one I can easily refill and that has the ability to create subaccounts?

It's not just Bluebird... Amex seems to be shutting down their entire reloadable card division, because I just got a similar email about 30 minutes ago about how they will be discontinuing Amex Serve cards on June 3, 2026.

I currently have a Walmart Bluebird account for my "Fun Money" account. It is the card I use for WebPurchases and other things I want to keep seperate from the Family account. My wife also uses it sometimes, so no secrets, only from scammers...
Anyway, BlueBird and Serve are shiutting down, so I need a new card.
Needs to be a PRE-PAID, don't want another checking account
Needs to be NO FEES as some inactive fees could eat an account.
Needs to be RELOADABLE
Needs to usable everywhere (Aliexpress, Amazon, others...)
All of the Articles that Like blueBird are right, its a great service, but apparently not sustainable.

Why? Sorry, you're making this way more difficult than it needs to be. Prepaid cards have no FDIC insurance, no regulations, terrible customer service and few, if any, fraud protections. If you insist on not using a credit card at shady retailers like Aliexpress, at least use a debit card for a separate checking account with overdraft disabled. Although a credit card is still the best thing to use for everything. There is no good reason to use these prepaid cards.

why are you rejecting the easiest solution that would be to get a normal bank account and get a normal credit card for online purchases for the consumer protections

I'm trying to help a relative who will be getting out of jail soon. He'll have nothing, and one thing I want to give him is a prepaid debit card or another way for him to access a few hundred dollars to get him started. It looked like a prepaid debit card was the best option, and Bluebird looked like the best prepaid debit card, with no fees as long as you use only MoneyPass ATMs and avoid the deposit methods that incur fees.
I had thought that prepaid debit cards were blank cards that you could give to anyone, that it was like giving cash but with a piece of plastic and a PIN. But when I went to order one, I saw that the person's name goes on the card. And one of the questions was for the person's SSN.
Bluebird also has sub-accounts, and maybe that's what I need, with this person having access only to a sub account. Another concern is that I want to be able to transfer money from my bank account onto this debit card, but I don't want this person to be able to access my bank account if he logs into the Bluebird account.
A downside of Bluebird is that there's no way to talk to a support person until you have an account, at least not that I could find.
What more can you tell me about prepaid debit cards work? Are they the best option in this situation, or do you have any other suggestions?

Without knowing how Bluebird sub-accounts work, what I would look for is a card/setup that's marketed towards parents for their children. It would offer what you want - the ability to give him secure access to funds without making him responsible for the account or giving him access to "parent" functions like adding money, changing funding accounts, etc. These usually have fees attached, but the peace of mind knowing that it works exactly how you want might be worth it until he can set up an account on his own that can receive funds from Venmo, Zelle, or whatever service.

I had thought that prepaid debit cards were blank cards that you could give to anyone, that it was like giving cash but with a piece of plastic and a PIN. Prepaid cards are of two types; reloadable, and non-reloadable. The non-reloadable are usually sold as "visa gift cards"; there is a specific amount loaded, maximum usually $500, and once the amount is used up, you can't add any more. These don't require any id or SSN. All "reloadable" debit cards ask for SSN; this is part of the Patriot Act. Some do allow alternatives like a Tax Identification number, but you do have to jump through hoops. You can add money to these cards periodically, including some that support bank transfers. Bluebird also has sub-accounts, and maybe that's what I need, with this person having access only to a sub account. Another concern is that I want to be able to transfer money from my bank account onto this debit card, but I don't want this person to be able to access my bank account if he logs into the Bluebird account. Yes. Bluebird has both the Amex prepaid debit card, and the Visa Prepaid Bank Account; check which one works better for you, but both support the "sub-account". For your requirement : Set up the Bluebird account with yourself as primary; then create a sub-account. Note there are restrictions on what a sub-account user can and can't do; including not being able to add cash themselves. The sub-account holder can't see your transactions; you can see all their transactions, and put limits including whether they can draw out cash at an ATM. While they can't see your bank details / transfer details; if you want to be even safer - just draw out cash from an ATM, then deposit it into your Bluebird account at any Walmart; no fees. You can then pass on some each period to the other person. If they do need to "deposit" money (earnings or other) - then they have to get their own bluebird main account, not be on a sub-account. AFAIK Bluebird does allow having both a sub account and a main account, but you may need to verify this with CS after you set up your account.
