I had this card as a part of my set of cards for maximizing cashback with zero annual fee. I think you hit the main idea already that without a lot of spend, this sort of micro optimization isn't very important. Another reason is that this card used to be 1% on all purchases. The new cashback allocation was added last year. If you shop at PC stores, the PC Financial World Elite is better, and they didn't used to always enforce the minimum spend either. I know a couple people recommended the BMO Cashback World Elite MasterCard but I must caution you that the card only looks great until you read the fine print. Out of all the cashback cards, it has a very low multiplier spend limit. For groceries, it's capped to $500/month. Other categories can be as low as $300/month. Unless you can keep your spend within the cap, you may be better off with a 4% card that doesn't have such low limits like the AMEX SimplyCash Preferred, CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite, Meridian Cashback Visa Infinite, the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite or the Desjardins Cashback World Elite MasterCard. If most of your spend takes AMEX and you don't drive a ton, I would argue that the AMEX Cobalt is one of the best cashback cards. Yes, it's technically a points card but you can redeem for cashback at 1 cpp, effectively making it a cashback card, though to get a much better redemption rate, redeeming against travel is better but you have choice. For a cashback-like card, the MBNA Rewards World Elite MasterCard is underrated. It pays 5x on grocery, dining, digital media, memberships and household utilities. There's also a 10% annual points bonus effectively making the 5x category a 5.5x category. I call it cashback-like because you can redeem for e-gift cards to Amazon, Esso, Indigo, Banana Republic/GAP/Old Navy, XBOX, Walmart & etc. at roughly 0.9 cpp. You can redeem for cashback at around 0.8 cpp. This means that you get effectively 5% or 4.5% back with the 5x category (with the 10% annual bonus on top). Personally have the MBNA Rewards World Elite MasterCard and been raking in over $600/year in gift cards. Being able to pay hydro, natural gas & water with the card & get the multiplier, even after accounting for the CC fees is amazing. More on reddit.com
