I prefer hardie. I left a couple pieces laying soaking on my deck over a Canadian winter and then put them back on the house in the spring. A little fragile at first, but now I can't tell which ones they were. Dust is an issue, and installation is big since you can put up full sheets with fewer breaks in the siding. I have vinyl siding on my current house and hate it. Stuff cracks stupid easily in the cold. Accidentally kicked the corner trim on my garage one winter and cracked the crap out of it. Pain to replace that peice. Also a pain to attach anything to the house. I would take Hardie board over vinyl any day. More on reddit.com

I hung vinyl for about 12yrs. It's not a bad siding, but there is better. I wouldn't hesitate to use it. The insulation would be a bigger concern for me. Not only does it slightly help with R-factor, but it also gives a smoother surface for the vinyl. If you have a lap siding now, it will look pretty bad if you don't use something to help the siding lie flat. More on reddit.com

So all board and batten means is this… the batten (smaller piece) just covers the seam of the board (wider piece) It’s originally just a siding style… you clad the structure in boards… then cover the seam with the batten to keep it as air tight as possible When you see it on interior walls, board and batten is just a style of “wainscoting” Wainscoting was originally a nice looking way to help seal and insulate stone walls.. but it also protects from damage better then plaster, or now drywall, from furniture, chairs, knocking into etc… So “board and batten” on an interior wall is just a design style of “wainscoting” A lot of the diyers just glue 1x or plywood strips to drywall because it’s way cheaper than covering your walls in all wood… but creates kinda the same look when it’s all called and painted You have to paint it though… if you want a nice dark wood look, it has to be all wood, you can’t stain drywall More on reddit.com
