I have vinyl siding on my current house and hate it. Stuff cracks stupid easily in the cold. Accidentally kicked the corner trim on my garage one winter and cracked the crap out of it. Building our first home. It is a mid century style ranch, and with the way prices are, we want to cut costs. One of the builders recommended vinyl board and batten for the house instead of brick or Hardie board. What do y’all think?

I would get hardie in the front at least. Then you can do vinyl lap around the rest. The vinyl batten looks and feels super plastic (surprise... because it is) up close. You can get away with it on gables, but you'll dislike the look and feel if it's right next to your front door
