So all board and batten means is this… the batten (smaller piece) just covers the seam of the board (wider piece) It’s originally just a siding style… you clad the structure in boards… then cover the seam with the batten to keep it as air tight as possible When you see it on interior walls, board and batten is just a style of “wainscoting” Wainscoting was originally a nice looking way to help seal and insulate stone walls.. but it also protects from damage better then plaster, or now drywall, from furniture, chairs, knocking into etc… So “board and batten” on an interior wall is just a design style of “wainscoting” A lot of the diyers just glue 1x or plywood strips to drywall because it’s way cheaper than covering your walls in all wood… but creates kinda the same look when it’s all called and painted You have to paint it though… if you want a nice dark wood look, it has to be all wood, you can’t stain drywall More on reddit.com

December 8, 2023Board and batten wall panel uneven. Advice on how to even out and create smooth look? I have went over with wood filler/sanded many times!
Kind of late now but I would have pocket screwed as much of it together as possible and put it on the wall as one or two units to try to minimize that. A less glossy paint will also help to hide the imperfections. I would sand all of it. More on reddit.com

I did the b&b for our Barndo. Hopefully they have made it a bit more rigid to compensate the “oil canning” effect. I love the look of it but it has various states depending on the temperature. When it’s really cold, I have “dimples” in mine that are conforming to the girts. I’m not particularly happy with what it’s doing but the landscaping will soon hide it and most people don’t notice. Im not a pro—hell, Im not even really a hobbyist! I used to build things with my dad when I was younger and we had a dual sliding compound miter saw that I learned to use when I was maybe too young to learn how to use a miter saw.
I like to go down ADHD rabbit holes. And I’ve been seeing a TON of board and batten over the last 5-7 years and I want to know the proper composition and utility for it. But all I can find is cheap DIY projects that are clearly not really board and batten—they are simply people gluing MDF to the wall and thinking it’ll look good in a year (not to mention they aren’t matching trims, and their verticals are hanging over their baseboards). This is infuriating.
So where do I find this info? Isnt their supposed to be a veneer “board” that the verticals and/or horizontals are supposed to “batten”…? I’m so sick of people thinking they are an artist when they are finger painting a coloring book.
I’m not even saying I’d take up doing it, I just want to know.
