r/GardeningUK on Reddit: Evergreen plants for a narrow border in full sun in summer & partial shade rest of year
August 2, 2025 -
I have a narrow border 2 m by .7 . I currently have a rose a clematis and a couple of geraniums growing. I’m new to gardening and tried planting perennials this spring. Most have died and all I have left is a very bare border. What small evergreens with a bit of height would help keep the border looking full throughout the year while leaving space for things like echinacea verbena foxgloves and salvia. Thanks

Maybe one (or more) Nandina domestica? Evergreen, lovely colourful foliage and bright red berries almost all year round.

You need something compact that's a small space, hebes might be worth looking at and are usually quite cheap too. A compact ceanothus maybe with the bonus of some stunning flowers. Look for compact evergreen shrubs and see what appeals.

Long border in full sun, what to plant?
Camellias tend to require acidic soil, so keep that in mind. If you already got established shrubs that give decent height, why not start under planting with perennials. I tend to picture borders in 3 heights. Tallest plants (1.5-2m+) at the back, medium height (around a meter) in the middle and smaller ground cover at the front. Doing this creates amazing looking borders that contain depth. Preferably look for long flowering perennials, preferably through to the first frosts. Have a look around a local nursery, look online and take a walk round the streets. If you see anything you like, take a picture to identify then do some research. I hope that helps you on your way, don't forget to enjoy the search for plants; I know I do P.s bees love salvia and so do I More on reddit.com

Might I suggest American Hazelnut. You have enough space for several of them. This is needed if you want to collect nuts. They are very tolerant of different conditions, etc. Mine, I planted last fall got bunny chewed, so I thought they were dead. NOPE. I'm getting leaves already. More on reddit.com

A plant that thrives in full sun may still do fine in partial sun, especially if exposure is in the afternoon. Growth may be a bit slower or flowering a touch less vigorous, but it shouldn’t be a big deal. There is no “best” shrub for full sun, as they will all thrive in different environments.
