You need to get the bass module. It is hollow without it. I have the rear speakers as well. They are more subtle and compliment the set well, but are not necessary Answer from man2000000 on reddit.com

r/bose on Reddit: My 1 year experience with the Bose Soundbar 900 and why I would not buy it again
November 8, 2023 -

So, it's been nearly a year now with my bose soundbar 900 and one of the main reasons for buying it was it's sleek design and of course the Dolby atmos functionality. Knowing Bose for good quality and good sound in general I bought it right away when it was on sale last year.

Although the sound is indeed very good, the one issue I continuously have is that it simply loses connection to whatever it claims to work with.

I stopped using it's "smart" feature just a few months after I bought it because it lost wifi connection (with the router being 2 meters in front of it). And no, doing a proper update of the soundbar never helped.

It also still randomly loses connection to my Samsung TV which it is connected to via hdmi arc. The only annoying way to make it work again is to disconnect the power cable and connect it back again. Until it loses connection in a few days again. Great. The best part is that there is not even a "restart this damn device" functionality via the remote, so you have to fucking disconnect the power cable.

This has been going for nearly a year now and I am extremely pissed off that I spent (wasted) hundreds of euros for such a unreliable soundbar.

This is just a warning for anyone who wants to buy one of these. I am aware that there are also people out there with no issues with the soundbar, congratulations to you lucky people. I just wanted to share my experience, since there is no review functionality on the bose page (maybe for a reason), where I bought my soundbar from.

Cheers.

To piggy back on this, there are a few TVs that specifically work horrendously with some of the Bose Soundbars. Notably a couple of the LG oled models and ton of the Samsung TVs. I have the Ultra soundbar and it was a nightmare getting the thing to work reliably. The issue comes mainly from HDMI CEC functionality where the TV and the soundbar are fucking up their handshake. Imagine you go to give a buddy a fist bump but he extends his hand out for a handshake. You both then switch, you go for the handshake and your buddy the fist bump. You both laugh and then both switch again. This goes on for eternity between the two. That's literally what's happening. Of course both the TV company and Bose point fingers at the other one saying that they fucked it up when it's the fact both need to just fucking sit down and get their shit together to work right. I still don't know exactly what I did, but on one of the power cycles everything synced up and worked reliably between my LG oled and the soundbar. Reliably is the keyword because I had so many issues with it in the past where it would work but then fail after switching inputs or some other ridiculous little thing that should never have fucked up the handshake. That being said, my samsung TV is a fucking nightmare. It fucks up with my xbox, it fucks up with Bose, it fucks up with playstation, airplay, and anything that's not samsung. I don't know what happened to that company but I always went with Samsung when I could. Even my fucking refrigerator is samsung. Now when I hear that name I practically get ptsd flashbacks. Companies need to start paying attention because they are losing lifelong customers. I've had tons of Bose sound systems over the last 20 years ever since I was blown away by a demo in Best Buy in my late teens. I'm sure as fuck going to reconsider the next time I need a sound system though because I'm also paying for the convenience and ease of use, which gets a little worse every new iteration.

Bose 900 soundbar + 3rd party (or homemade) subwoofer + HST-18 | AVS Forum
I bought a 900 this week and the surrounds. Really want to run a home made sub from parts express with it. Brandon ... Unfortunately no. Hopefully if everyone pressures bose it might happen ... Knowing Bose...I'm fairly sure they've locked people out of using the bass out port with 3rd party subs. This is why they don't advertise what could have been a good LFE out of the soundbar.

March 9, 2022 - Springing for both the subwoofer and the surround speaker kit would bring the total price for the whole shebang to roughly $2,300–expensive, yes, but this is Bose we’re talking about.

r/bose on Reddit: Smart Soundbar 900 - Sub & Sattelites necessary?
December 26, 2022 -

For those of you who have the 900, is it worth it to add the sub & sattelites, or just the sub? I’m thinking of doing just the standalone bar but I’m not sure how much of a difference the sub will add.

I like bass to movies & shows but I don’t need my living room to rumble. How good is the bass on the 900 alone?

long post alert I currently have the SB 900 w/ 700 bass module and just recently added the 700 surrounds. Bose’s website has them new for $600 and I was able to use my student discount and get them for like 520. They are definitely underwhelming at that price point but they do make a very noticeable difference in my listening experience. I chose the 360 degree audio 700s over the cheaper direct audio cubes because my listening area has a 10’ space between the back wall and they really help to fill it with sound. If you have a wall close to or right up against the back of your listening area or if it’s a smaller space in general, I would say the standard cubes would be more than enough. I feel like the 700s have greater flexibility in where you can position them and they definitely are sleek and produce good sound for being not much bigger than an iPhone. I originally had them ceiling mounted which gave a general rear/overhead ambient surround sound. I found some Sanus floor stands on Amazon for $50 that I was able to make work with them and have noticed they sound more surround soundish now. The matrix resurrections had some good scenes where bullets and rockets transitioned flawlessly between the bar and speakers. I don’t know if Bose plans to release a new series of accessory speakers to accompany the atmos from the 900 but I still have over 2 months on the return policy in case word gets out that they are releasing new surrounds. Do make sure you run adaptiq with either choice. I had it turned off because it causes a major decrease in subwoofer output but ended up using a huge blanket and some pillows while running it again and this worked. Now everything is working in harmony, the output is still a little less than pre-adaptiq but the better timing produced from it is worth the minor decrease in overall loudness.

I only have experience with the 700 speakers, and honestly I find them mostly underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, the do the job and there are times that I'm impressed with the surround sound, but mostly they're just ok. Minor sound coming from the rear. I have mine set to max volume and they still don't really stand out unless it's cranked fairly high. Personally I expected more from them but maybe that's just me. For 700 bucks though you kinda expect to be wowed.
