The Soundtouch app on my Win 11 machines are opening a debug log window which shows all the discovery process for all the Soundtouch speakers on my local LAN. Not a big issue, actually it's pretty interesting to see all the network back-and-forth as it compiles the information it needs. (I think it's actually logging the activity of the helper app) This is a mild irritant as It's no effort to just X the window to get rid of it.
While I'm griping (sorry!) it's pretty irritating when I leave the Soundtouch app up and running and leave it for a while. After a time of inactivity (I guess when the system goes into sleep mode) the app is still there but totally unresponsive and I have to kill/restart it and again all is well. Most other apps can just keep working with no bounce, but the Soundtouch always is needing restart.
Griping aside, I really like the Bose Soundtouch platform with speakers in every room which sound terrific with all playing in sync. Great stuff!
I'm planning a whole house wireless music system. The hardware looks amazing. I'm thinking the weak link in these systems is the app (given android updates, wi-fi changes, etc.). If the app is junk or is not maintained then it seems these systems turn into bricks. Oh, and there is probably zero incentive for Bose to maintain an old app.
My current passive/wired/no-software system is going on 20 years. I know it's unrealistic to think wireless systems would last that long given changes to technology.
What's the current expectation of longevity before the app is too slow / buggy?
This is just a start, but I have added a SoundTouch app alternatives page to the Bose Wiki.
There, I listed current known issues, added info shared by the app developer Christian, u/nachtfux997, and included known solutions.
I separated the solutions into two sections.
Ones that allow you to control the SoundTouch systems directly (e.g. AirPlay, 3rd party apps, Home Assistant, etc.).
The second section is for 3rd party devices you connect to your SoundTouch system's AUX input.
I am hoping that the community will help expand the information on the Wiki. Not only to help guide SoundTouch users to viable options, but also to help guide developers on what SoundTouch features are missing. So that some, if not all, can be replicated once the app goes away.
This specific post is about alternative SoundTouch solutions.
If you wish to talk in general about the closure of the SoundTouch app, it is best to bring it to the main topic.
If you wish to sign the petition asking Bose to reconsider, follow this link.
