What is the difference between worst-case scenario and upper bound (O)?
O, Omega and theta talk about functions. They establish upper, lower and exact bounds of a mathematical function. The worst case runtime W(n) is the mathematical function that returns the worst posible runtime for a given problem size, n. The average case runtime A(n) is the mathematical function that returns the average runtime for a given problem size, n. Imagine a sorting algorithm that on average, runs in nlogn seconds when n is even but n2 seconds when n is odd. Its average-time function would be: A(n) = { n^2 if n is even { n log n otherwise We would say that A belongs to O(n2) and also belongs to Omega(nlogn). Meaning the expected runtime for a random input, if we dont know n exactly, is between n log n and n2. On the other hand, if the algorithm always runs in n2 seconds when the input is sorted, then the worst case runtime would be at least n2, so the worst-time function W belongs to Omega(n2). If the runtime is always at most n2 then W also belongs to O(n2). Since the worst case runtime has the same upper and lower bound, W belongs to Theta(n2). TL;DR Average case, best case and worst case are mathematical functions that could, in principle, be axactly derived from the algorithm. But, since they are often hard to calculate, we settle for knowing some of theirs asymptotic bounds. More on reddit.com
