Do you still do Boxing Day shopping? I remember when I was growing up, Boxing Day was all the rage. Now, at least where I am (in Canada), Black Friday is almost as much as, maybe even more popular, and sales are quite disappointing. I'm not planning to buy anything, I am tired of spending money, but wondering how others feel.

Deciding on if I should take the current deal or wait to see if Boxing Day brings it down even further

Anyone ever purchase around this time in other years and see any Boxing Day specific deals?

I happen to visit most of the stores during this boxing day maddness where you see lineups hours long. I got all the info and plugged into spreadsheet, these are the results I am getting.

DeviceProviderPlan detailsProvider Plan CostFinancing FeeDurationDownpayment incl device TaxesMonthly Plan and device costCompared BYOD planTotal Device Cost (Before Taxes)If Device bought outright (incl taxes)Total device with plan (Contract) before taxesTotal Paid with BYOD plan and device bought from Apple/SamsungDifference /benefit of contract vs buying outright

Bottom line: You are actually getting back your own money. Those $200 gift cards is actually your own money that businesses want you to spend in their own brands (Best Buy, Costco, Wirelesswave etc), only thing is its given in advance

Edit

As folks discussing below, this maths are for newer phones and specific to Apple but you can play the math with older devices and they would be pretty much breakeven or might be positively beneficial. The only caveat with older devices (be it Apple or Google or Samsung) are their device OS life could be limited to next 12-25 months as we know latest device OS will not support older devices unless you are ok to not to update OS and eventually the supporting apps on it stop may be by year 5 or so, and at that point, if you have used the device then the economics of buying these older device on Boxing / Black Friday day might work out in favor of device contracts but then the carriers would start racking up their monthly at end of contract and eventually you have to shop around again.

At Best Buy, the Bravia 7 was a few hundred bucks cheaper during Black Friday week than it is during their current sale ending Dec 23. Wondering if it’s worth waiting.

Yes! Tbh they're usually the same price for both days however sometimes there will be better pricing boxing day. The br7 as an example will probably be that same price starting on boxing day itself. Sometimes companies will take it off promo before boxing day/in between black Friday & boxing day so that with boxing day sales it still shows a savings deal because it wasn't at that sale price for long enough to make it seem like the regular price. (Ps I work in a TV retailer so I watch the pricing close)

Lately? It has disappeared about 10 years ago lol. I once wanted to buy 2 shirts from the bay. It was 39.99 about a week before boxing day. I was like, I'll just wait for boxing day. Waited for said day. Now it's 80 dollars but with a 50% off tag on it. Fuckin crazy. Aside from electronics, everything else is a scam. If something is on sale, it's usually overstock that people dont want.

I spent some time working in retail as both a buyer and a promotions manager, and I can say two things. First, is that one reason the sales aren't as good is because retailers have been pushing more towards "micro events" throughout the year to bolster their sales. If you're looking to buy a new 20v drill, the price at Father's Day is going to be just as good as Black Friday.  This isn't because the BF price is worse - it's because the FD price is better. Basically, retailers are regularly throughout the year driving prices on key items down to zero margin.  Retailers are loathe to sell anything at truly negative margin, so there's nothing left for them to do at Black Friday except pull out tricks like selling a lower-spec item or faking the regular price for a "deeper discount". The second is Foreign Exchange.  As our dollar gets weaker and weaker, all of the stuff we buy from China (typically in USD) gets more expensive. A retailer who sold an item as $99.99 last year for zero margin now has a few options simply due to FX.  Sell at a loss (not going to happen), sell a cheaper version (often happens), bump your price all the way to $119.99 because $109.99 is an ugly price point customers don't like (often happens).

r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Are Boxing Day sales worth the aggravation?
December 26, 2022 -

I drove by Yorkdale and Vaughan Mills today and was perplexed at the backed up traffic on the highways and absolutely full parking lots. I felt anxiety just thinking of trying to get parking and walking through the crowds. Thankfully I’m not in a financial situation where I need to rely on deep discounted sales- however, are Boxing Day (Black Friday) sales worth the stress and anxiety of unruly crowds? Even if the discounts are high, I wonder how many people purchase with credit cards and pay 20+% interest on their deals

r/AskCanada on Reddit: Why are Boxing Day deals so horrible this time around?

I've chosen Boxing Day over Black Friday a number of times in recent years and have always got some amazing and better deals.

However, with the GST rebate kicking in this month, the corporations seem to have had the last laugh again.

They have jacked up prices for so many items including Apple Watch 9 and PlayStation, which I was looking to purchase.

Costco just went from $614 + tax for PS5 disc + remote to $669 for digital version + remote without tax.

SportChek gave series 9 watches at $350 range and now it's $499 everywhere.. wtf.

They shifted from Boxing Day to Boxing week and it seems they've distributed the discount percentage too in their heads.

Huge disappointment tbh. Costco specially, truly awful and so overpriced for everything.

Might as well find a deal in groceries. lol
