You don't escape square brackets in LaTeX if you want them typeset. \[ and \] are basically synonyms for \begin{displaymath} and \end{displaymath}, (or \begin{equation*} and \end{equation*} with amsmath loaded), and will make the enclosed content typeset in a unnumbered displayed math equation on a separate line, which is clearly not what you want.

I see quite a number of news articles that have a word, usually a connecting word, contained inside square brackets. Almost all of the time, the sentence wouldn’t make any sense without the word in question.
E.g “The Olympic Games will be cancelled [if] the pandemic isn’t under control”.

Square brackets indicate a change. A word or phrase that was not in the original quote, usually added for clarity. For example: Original excerpted quote: "Well, that's what he believed at the time." Edited quote: "Well, that's what [John] believed at the time."

It's inside a quotation, yeah? It's because you can't just change the words someone says you without signaling that to the reader. If you're a legitimate outlet with journalistic standards, anyway. So if the writer or editor cuts something, like a redundant or confusing word or repetition or something, out of a quote, they'll add an ellipsis ("..."). If they add or replace, they'll use brackets. Like ... "If the publication cuts something ... out of a quote, they'll add an ellipsis," the internet stranger said. "If they add [something] or replace [something], they'll use brackets.
