In 2009, I purchased two soft-sided two-wheeled Samsonite check in size suitcases. They cost me $90 each on sale. My son and I have used them every other year to travel to Istanbul. Also, my son uses the Samsonite when visiting my parents, about 4x a year. My fiance and I have used them 4x together for domestic travel. Even with the Samsonite costing twice as much now, I fail to see the added value of an $800 Briggs & Riley. Sometimes, the absolute best is unnecessary. Answer from Village_Spinster on reddit.com

Why isn't Briggs & Riley more popular / talked about?
I bought a Briggs & Riley ZDX (medium, four wheel suitcase). It’s got full expansion, which is rare in soft suitcases, and it’s not crazy heavy plus the warranty sounded great. Flew to Japan, am packing to leave first hotel and the expansion zipper failed with the suitcase expansion now being stuck open for rest of trip. Get home and try to warranty it—they want me to pay to ship it to them in NY. I’m in SF, their local repair center closed in 2020, neareSY one is in LA (so basically a flight away). Shipping will be like $100. I bitch and moan (politely) about this and say it’s ridiculous for a new suitcase—finally they relent, I think because their support center is about to end their day, and agree to cover my shipping. Of course I didn’t keep the box so that’s a headache but I ship it and get it it back 3+ weeks later, just in time for another trip. Now I’m in Germany, have taken one direct flight and a train to get there. I’m packing up to leave the hotel and realize the expansion zipper slider has gone completely AWOL. I’ve yet to try to argue with them to cover that repair but this bag has been a complete letdown and I’ve taken a Samsonite Pro carry on 20+ sometimes complex trips for comparison. So I don’t trust this suitcase to last at all, and their warranty is a pain given shipping a suitcase isn’t all that economical. If you look around flight attendants don’t use them much anymore. Away luggage vs Monos luggage vs Briggs & Riley luggage
If you are comfortable with the price of B&R, just buy the Torq. The warranty is incredible, and lots of large airports have shops in them that will fix your bag or get you a new one, if something is to happen on the trip. More on reddit.com

Away luggage vs Briggs & Riley luggage

Briggs & Riley all the way. Their warranty is awesome - they'll even cover airline damage.

I'd spend a little more for their baseline collection though - it is soft-sided, but amazingly durable.

r/ManyBaggers on Reddit: Why isn't Briggs & Riley more popular / talked about?
January 16, 2024 -

It seems like every Youtuber talks about TravelPro, Monos, Away, July, Tumi, and Rimowa. Monos, Away, and July are trendy and attractive so that makes sense. TravelPro is affordable. But Tumi is expensive as hell with a terrible warranty and has gotten worse in quality. Rimowa, while very good, is even more expensive.

Why does no one talk about or review Briggs & Riley?

There are pockets of reddit (like on BIFL) that talk about B&R, but there aren't many posts compared to the other brands mentioned. Even Tumi and Rimowa have their own subreddits.

It's just confusing because their reputation and warranty are all highly praised by people who DO know them. Just seems like not many people really "know" them.

I have 2 theories:

  1. Briggs and Riley spend virtually nothing on advertising & marketing. They don't pay anyone to review their bags. And I've never seen an ad on social media.

  2. Briggs and Riley are "too expensive" for not being "trendy and attractive" enough. Tumi and Rimowa are expensive but they look really expensive. Monos, Away, July look kinda expensive while being kinda affordable. TravelPro isn't expensive looking, but they're affordable and durable. Briggs and Riley is kind of in this weird spot where they're too expensive for not being expensive looking, albeit being the best brand and best warranty.

I kind of think of the question in the opposite way.... Q: Why do so many YouTuber influencer types talk about Monos etc? A: Money, it's always money! Presumably they just don't throw money at YouTubers like the trendy brands do. None of that other stuff is actually good enough to deserve the amount of attention received.
