r/CPST on Reddit: Britax one4life clicktight installation question for in a classic car.
October 2, 2024 -

Hello, We have our britax one4life clicktight car seat currently installed in our Hyundai santa fe, we have it done via the seatbelt and it is rear facing for our 3yr, nearly 4yr, old.

Hubby recently bought one of his dream classic cars, a 1958 Edsel citation. The backseats don't have seatbelts,, and we ideally do not want to install carseat in front.

Two questions, first is regarding whats available seatbelts wise in the car currently.

So: There are no air bags in the car, the front seats (are a bench type seat) have seatbelts, but they are only lap belts.

Is there any safe way to install our daughters car seat in the front of this car? Can it still be rear facing? We arent comfortable with having her travel forward facing unless it was an emergency with 0 other options.

2) We'd ideally love to install retractable 3point harness shoulder to lap seatbelts in the backseat area, but unsure if we can do so with how the cars layout and panels are.

  • To safely install the britax one4life clicktight in rear facing, does it have to be a retractable 3point harness shoulder-to-lap belt?

  • Is there the capability to safely install it using only a lap belt? Or a shoulder-lap belt that ISN'T retractable/adjustable may be a possibility, but less likely than that of a lap belt.

  • are there any other safe installation options? I know that you can't retrofit isofix into a car, so that isnt an option I believe.

We would really love to go on family adventures and trips in the Edsel over summer particularly, but cant do so unless we know our daughters carseat can be safely installed rear facing.

Thanks for any help and advice!

There are instructions in your manual for a lap belt only. You’d have to talk to a body shop who knows classic cars on whether the car is structurally sound enough to have seatbelts installed. The seatbelts need to be mounted somewhere that can take crash forces, and that car wasn’t built with that in mind. Definitely only rear face in this car with your child. They cannot use a booster in it. So they can ride in it as long as they rear face. I would feel remiss if I also didn’t point out that the car is unsafe for adults. I simply want you to have this information to use as you want to travel in it. No crumple zone. No airbags. No upper body protection with a shoulder belt. No headrests to protect the spine as it rebounds back. If the belts are nearly 70 years old I’d make sure they had no prior crashes that would stretch them and make them potentially pointless in another collision. If the belts aren’t nearly 70 years old, were they installed in a way that will actually help, or just in a way to make the car road legal (those are not the same thing). Your child will be the most protected person rear facing in this car. By far.

Unless the car was engineered to have shoulder belts as an option, anything you install in that car will only give you a false sense of security. A seat belt is only as strong as its weakest link. If that’s where it’s attached to the frame of the car in a place that wasn’t meant for it, then that is where it will fail in a crash. Same principle applies to lap belts you may want to install in the back. Unless the frame of the car was engineered for lap belts as an option, they will be decorative at best. Can you install the car seat? Follow the instructions that came with the car seat and if you get a secure install with a secure/safe/working seat belt then yes you can. Rear facing ideally, since I presume you don’t have anywhere to tether the seat. It’s ok to rear face in the front since there are no airbags. I cannot advise you on whether you can safely retrofit seat belts of any kind in that vehicle. That’s something you’re going to have to research. Perhaps the folks at Seatbelt Planet might know, but even then keep in mind their business is run on selling you seat belts so I can’t totally guarantee they will be forthcoming with all of the realities and limitations. I think if you ask the right questions like “is the frame of this car equipped with reinforced seat belt anchors that would allow me to install a crashworthy seat belt” they will probably be able to tell you yes, no, or we don’t know. Generally I’ve found them to be pretty helpful. A reality of classic cars is that they do not have the safety features of newer vehicles. Contemporary child safety seats are built with (more or less) modern cars in mind and may not provide quite the same protection as they would in a newer vehicle, keeping in mind that the car seat is the LAST line of defense in the crash - the first being to avoid a collision in the first place, followed by the car’s crumple zones, and after that the car’s safety restraints such as air bags and seat belts. By putting your child in a classic car you are choosing to simply go without a lot of those protections. That doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t enjoy your hobby. People take calculated risks all the time. This is a personal choice, like riding a motorcycle, which only you can decide whether the enjoyment you get from it is worth the inherent risks of the activity. I probably would not ride in one unless it were in a low speed parade or something, but that’s because I wouldn’t get enough enjoyment out of it to be worth the risk. I don’t live my life wrapped in bubble wrap. I simply try to be mindful of which risks I’m willing to take and don’t take them for no reason. I wouldn’t put my kid in a classic car for a road trip, but I did buy her a horse and I’ve taken her snorkeling in the open ocean, so… I would not be in a place to judge if you make a different choice from me. Does that help??
