r/malefashionadvice on Reddit: Brooks Brothers 1818 vs Suit Supply Tuxedo
November 21, 2024 -

I am looking to get some advice on Suit Supply vs Brooks Brothers 1818 for a made to measure tuxedo. A lot of the previous posts I’ve read on this are prior to the Brooks Brothers bankruptcy and subsequent decline in quality and relate to suits so I am looking for some current opinions on tuxedos. Does the decline in quality apply to the 1818 line? How does suit supply compare? Anywhere else I should look in the $800-$1500 range?

Guys, sorry if it sounds stupid or "where have you been for the last 2 years" but I see that a BB's Tuxedo Shop is gone and all tuxes and associated products are gone and I couldn't google anything about it, it all looks like it's died and nobody cares. Could anyone please confirm if it's all gone forever?

r/brooksbrothers on Reddit: Help: Which Vintage BB Tux For Wedding
August 4, 2024 -

Good day, everyone—first-time poster here! I’m seeking advice on which Brooks Brothers tuxedo jacket to buy. I’ve found three options in good condition, all in my size, and I’m having trouble deciding. (I will post picture of the tag followed by a picture of that jacket)

I’m getting married in South Carolina this August, and since weddings are expensive, I’ve decided to invest in a high-quality, used Brooks Brothers tuxedo (made in the USA/Canada) and have it tailored, rather than renting. I’ve always wanted to do Black Tie, so this feels like the perfect opportunity.

I came across a forum that explains how to identify the era of a tuxedo based on its tags, but unfortunately, many of the tag images are no longer available. As a long-time Brooks Brothers fan (since high school, and I’m 24 now), I’d really appreciate any input or guidance you can offer!

Thank you in advance for your help!

I am making this thread as a discussion and resource to other people interested in updated Brooks brothers. I regularly read older threads but felt an updated one was needed.

In recent years, there have been fashion changes, bankruptcy’s, and change in general feel of BB suits. That being said, I recently bought 2 1818s and love them. I have a couple explorers and they are pretty nice but not holding up too well. I have to wear a suit to work everyday and currently have 7 I regularly wear.

I just can’t seem to find an alternative that is consistently comparable. I love the customer support and in shop tailors, but I get frustrated with quality brand prices and unless you’re buying their top of the line clothes, it’s not that well made. The fits are always changing, always ask what country they’re made in. They also just changed the names from Milano, regent, Madison to new names and the fits are totally different. 4 years ago I bought 4 recent shirts (36x16) regent shirts and they were the best I’ve ever owned. Since then, I cannot find the same shirts. I’ve even brought the old ones into the store and the sales people tell me they’ve never carried that shirt even thought I bought it in the same store. Another example, when I got the my new suits, I got new shirts too and hate how baggy they are.

Also, nothing in BB is worth more than 60% of retail value. They regularly run 40% off sales and you can stack a new credit card discount (20-25%) on top of that. Ends up being about 55% off. As I write this, the whole site is 50% off.

After writing all that, it sounds like I hate BB- I don’t. I pretty much exclusively wear it but just want to see how I can continue to improve. If anyone can offer their experiences or some advice, I’d be glad to hear it.

As a BB customer for over 30 years, I've gotten to see them roll with the changes in American workwear, and clearly they've taken their punches over that time. But I think their quality has consistently put them near the top of RTW. No, never as trendy and young as J Crew, but their classic clientele (IMO) are guys more familiar with c-suite than gyms and happy hours, which again, has been a challenge for them. Like or not their casual style, but they've seemed to define the "Hamptons weekend" look for a few generations; classic, stylish, not too outrageous. For me I've long worn their business clothing, for years their shirts were my staple. Maybe a broader commentary, but with the radical shift away from traditional business dress (suit and tie), my suits and shirting from BB has dropped to essentially nothing; I literally can't remember the last time I had to wear a suit for work, much less a tie. But... if the tides should turn and there's a requirement for traditional, solid quality, American business dress, there are few competitors for BB.

If you have 7 suits from Brooks Brothers which you interchange regularly / daily and they’re not “holding up too well” you must be really battering them because they’re pretty robust, they’re not made in superfine fabric. Are you dry cleaning them weekly or something if so, stop that because that destroys the fabric and causes suits to deteriorate quickly I’m familiar with BB but have never shopped there myself so I’ve just familiarised my self with its product offering and price point. Here in the UK they have a 30% Sale and from what I can see a basic full price suit there starts at £470 $597 and they go up to £1130 $1437 in my opinion, if you can afford to spend that kind of money you can definitely afford to replace brooks brothers with Canali or Zegna if you can find it in the sale and I would advise and suggest you do that. Both Zegna and Canali are made in Italy and for the money you’re spending you’ll get a really good suit that will last with the correct / good care

Their suits fit nicely. As do suitsupply's and JCrew, which are similarly priced.
They also have a tux but come with notched lapels...it's not going to be a formal wedding so I'm OK with it. Any reviews on these or if they're put together better (canvassing) than the regular red fleece line? Is it better than SS or JC? For a better suit should I just go for the main BB line?
Thanks.

May 19, 2021 -

Hi all. I was directed here from r/brooksbrothers and am hoping to get some input from the experts.

I’ve been looking for a new suit and a tuxedo and am trying to understand the current Brooks Brothers suit collections. Many post I’ve found seem to be a few years old and mention suit collections which aren’t sold anymore (Golden Fleece). It seems Brooks Brothers currently sells three suit collections 1818, Brookscool, and Brooksgate. It looks like 1818 is higher quality collection. Does anybody have recent experiences with the 1818 suits and/or tuxedo?

I have shirts and some casual pants from Brooks Brothers and like the fit which is why I’m looking for suits there too.

1818 is their signature suiting line. In the past, these were high quality classic cuts, often woven of Italian fabric in their United States factory, or made in Italy, or in another country. This was the core of BB’s suiting lineup. Golden Fleece is no longer being manufactured, although they are still selling several Golden Fleece suits online, often at a reduced price. Golden Fleece was considered to be a tad more premium than 1818, meaning maybe a different type of yarn was used, less fusing, et cetera, and it was always made in this country as far as I know, at Southwick in Massachusetts. You could probably also find unique designs and styles with Golden Fleece. Brooksgate is considered their entry-level line. It is intended for prep school and college students, and young professionals who are just beginning. This is their suit separates line, and is only available in the slimmer Regent and Milano cuts. These are still being made as far as I know. It is intended as a “gateway” line into the rest of brooks brothers, as you may start with Brooksgate as a young man and eventually invest in the higher tiers of suiting. In the past it was good quality though I’m not entirely sure of its current state. Brookscool and Brookscloud are variations of the other suit lines, for example you could see an 1818 Brookscool Suit or a Golden Fleece Brookscloud suit. The former is a type of lightweight, breathable construction that is used, while the latter emphasizes minimal construction elements within the garment, very little padding and structure. Bottom line is that at one time all of them were good options. I have had 1818, Brooksgate, and Golden Fleece Suits before and have liked all of them. The problem now is that given the current state of BB it could be a gamble to buy something like this. However, I think that the Golden fleece suits would be good if you could find one, and the 1818 most likely should be good. It would help if you could go to a BB store and take a look there.

What's your size? Under their sales page, you can still find some Golden Fleece suits ( https://www.brooksbrothers.com/APPAREL/Mens_Apparel_sale,default,sc.html?prefn1=itemType&prefv1=Suits&srule=price-high-to-low&_omna=sort-by )

r/Lawyertalk on Reddit: I’m Gonna Say It… Brooks Brothers Is Great
September 20, 2024 -

Lots of Reddit talk about suits, quality/price, etc., and in each of these threads - people bash my beloved Brooks Brothers.

I am a newish attorney (2yrs), and an Attorney needs suits. BUT suits are expensive baby! As an attorney, the good ole “spend the money for one good suit, it’ll last your life” doesn’t apply here. I need 5-10 suits, I need them now, and I’ll have plenty of opportunities later in my career to buy the fancy suits I want.

I’ve been to the bespoke suit stores, the department stores, etc., and nobody, HANDS DOWN, beats Brooks Brothers for young attorneys. I’ve heard “well they don’t last for 5/10 years like my Italian wool” - well I don’t need them to.

If you can find an outlet, they run 2 suits for $700, and often run % discounts on top of this price. If not, they run deals on their website where you can get a whole suit for $400. They fit good and they look classic. (For the love of God, tailor tailor tailor)

My only point here, and if a fellow young attorney is researching suits for work, check BB first. Don’t listen to the snobs, these suits will treat you well and treat your wallet well. We’re young, we’re not at the peak of our earning potential, and we likely owe the Federal Government a lot of money (student loans - NOT tax evasion). The label is on the inside of the jacket anyway - nobody will question you if it looks and fits good.

(Also, if anyone else has recommendations I’d love to hear them)

Thought it might be fun if anybody has any “inside baseball” questions about BB or the tuxedo world. Worked in the formalwear world while in college/ before law school and LOVED it. Loved working there and learned a lot about how the industry has changed over the years.

I’m looking to buy a couple new suits, and right now my top contender is the Brooks Brothers 1818. I’m a history guy and love the brand’s story, it’s the right price point for me (buy two for $1700), and I don’t doubt the quality.

What are your opinions on the BB cuts though? I’ve heard some say they’re the “classic American-cut suit”, and boxy definitely isn’t my style. I’m a regular/athletic build and I like a slimmer cut, but there are some slim cut suits out there that are way too slim for me. I know Brooks has three different cuts to choose from.

Does anyone have any experience/opinions on how these suits look in the real world? Would the regular or slim fit look sharp with a nice tailoring job? Are there other brands I should look at for a more modern style?

Thanks!

Hello, I have a weddig to go to and I need to find a suit. The dress code is black suit, tie optional. It has been a while since I’ve worn a suit. In my early 20s I would go to the mall to either express or H&M to get a jacket, pants and even dress shirt. How do I find out what size I am? Should I measure myself or go to a store that does measurements? Any suggestions for a good priced suit. Not looking to spend a lot. Any help would be appreciated.

December 10, 2008 - I would go with the BB. I believe it is made by Southwick. You actually read his post? It's called Peak Lapel, cogitoergosum81. By all means, please go into Brooks Brothers and ask for that "Wing tip ****" tux.

I'm in the market for a classically styled tuxedo for my wedding, but I can't seem to find an OTW or MTM option the checks all the boxes. Where are you guys getting your tuxedos?

I think most could agree on the following as staples of a more classic/traditional tuxedo:

  • 100% wool

  • Single breasted (non-darted)

  • Single button closure

  • Peak (or shawl) lapel

  • Grosgrain or satin facings

  • Jetted pockets

  • No vent

Many of the go-to shops for Ivy and classic styling all seem to lack in this area. For instance, consider the following:

  1. J. Press Tuxedo Suit - Peak Lapel: center vent, flap pockets

  2. O'Connell's Classic Notch Lapel Tuxedo: notch lapel, flap pockets, center vent

  3. Brooks Brothers Classic Fit Wool 1818 Tuxedo: not lapel, flap pockets, center vent

  4. The Andover Shop Peak Lapel Tuxedo: side vents, flap pockets

  5. The Armoury Wool Model 4 Tuxedo: darted

  6. Suitsupply Black Three-Piece Tailored Fit Lazio Tuxedo: side vents (not explicitly stated, hard to tell from photos online), darted

  7. Spier and Mackay Black Tuxedo: side vents, darted

I'll admit to going down a rabbit whole with this, as any on looker will probably never know the difference or remotely care what kind of xyz your tuxedo has. Made in the USA is also always preferred whenever possible.

At this point, I'm considering going with a MTM option from Junior's in Philly. It looks like I can check most of the boxes here, and I'm local to the shop, which is a bonus. Would you do similar, or should I just relax my standards?
