Goodbye Node.js Buffer
In case you're too lazy to read: The blog post discusses the Node.js Buffer's history, its issues like security vulnerabilities and inefficiencies, and the introduction of a new alternative, TypedArray. The author explains how TypedArray addresses Buffer's shortcomings, providing a more secure and efficient way of handling binary data in Node.js. The transition from Buffer to TypedArray marks a significant improvement in Node.js, aligning it with modern JavaScript standards. If you don't like the summary, just downvote and I'll try to delete the comment eventually ๐Ÿ‘ More on reddit.com

Can anyone explain what are node js buffers, with some practical examples?
It's a byte array. From the docs, they represent "a fixed length sequence of bytes". > Buffer.from('test') 74 = ascii 't' 65 = ascii 'e' 73 = ascii 's' 74 = ascii 't' The Japanese word for "test" is a little bit more difficult because it uses UTF-8 characters. > Buffer.from('ใƒ†ใ‚นใƒˆ') If you paste the hexidecimal characters into this website's "UTF-8 Code" text box and hit the convert button then you'll see it decoded into the Japanese string. It is an array of bytes, often referred to in other languages as a "byte array". You cannot directly manipulate the contents of an ArrayBuffer; instead, you create one of the typed array objects or a DataView object which represents the buffer in a specific format, and use that to read and ...

Goodbye, Node.js Buffer โ€” Sindre Sorhus
October 24, 2023 - It's time to move from Buffer to Uint8Array. The Buffer type has been the cornerstone for binary data handling in Node.js since the beginning. However, these days we have Uint8Array, which is a native JavaScript type and works cross-platform. While Buffer is an instance of Uint8Array, it introduces numerous methods that are not available in other JavaScript environments.

June 4, 2024 - While creating a buffer from an array, the array bytes should fall between the range of 0 and 255. Otherwise, the array entries will be shortened to fit in. The example below shows how to create a buffer from strings, arrays, and ArrayBuffer() using the buffer.from() method:

May 1, 2020 - To create a buffer from pre-existing data, we use the from() method. We can use that function to create buffers from: An array of integers: The integer values can be between 0 and 255. An ArrayBuffer: This is a JavaScript object that stores a fixed length of bytes.

July 26, 2026 - As stated earlier, Buffer in Node is an extension of the native Uint8Array class in JavaScript. So naturally all the operations that are supported on Uint8Array are supported on Buffer too. This means that we can leverage the very familiar bracket notation โ€” as we use with arrays โ€” to access individual bytes from a Buffer instance, and also to write to them.

Prior to the introduction of TypedArray, the JavaScript language had no mechanism for reading or manipulating streams of binary data. The Buffer class was introduced as part of the Node.js API to enable interaction with octet streams in TCP streams, file system operations, and other contexts.
