How to Get That Built-in Media Wall You Really Want
Cabinetmaker Stewart True of True Carpentry and Cabinetry in Cummings, Georgia, says 36 inches is a good height for a base, while 20 to 24 inches is a good depth — deep enough for board games and electronics.

All of the weight of a flat screen TV is concentrated in the center so that is where you need the support. I would also not feel comfortable having a large TV (it must be fairly large to weight 92 lbs) just sitting on a mantle. I would want it secured better, in the manner of a specially designed bracket. For shelf depth, measure the depth of your largest item that will be on the shelves.

How to Build a Custom built-in Entertainment Center
April 5, 2024 - One of the biggest decisions of this DIY entertainment center was how to create the built-in media cabinets for the lower portion. And an easy way is to use pre-made wall cabinets from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Which I linked below in the materials list. We went this route before, with our DIY bathroom stacked countertop cabinets and it looks custom! Why wall cabinets? Because they’re half the depth ...

r/hometheater on Reddit: How deep for a built in media cabinet/media center?
July 7, 2024 -

Hello all!

I'm looking to install a home theater setup in a multipurpose room, and I have the ability to do a 7.2.4 setup with a 75" TV (I think). I am taking out a wall to replace the drywall with cement board and put up some natural stone. I'd like to add a built-in fireplace/shelf/AV cabinet/media center thing that I've designed, and I would like to keep it around the 18"-22" depth and 66" width if possible. I have included pictures of my room that I drew in CAD as well as the 75" TV, the two DefTech BP9040s fronts that I own, the BP9040 center that I own, and some misc. gaming consoles that I have. I also have included the floating shelves my wife has requested and, in some photos, the couch we currently own. I may or may not replace the couch depending on how awkward it is to maneuver around.

My questions are these:

  1. Is a ~20" deep shelf enough for a Denon AVR-X6800H receiver? The shelf that would hold this would be 20"Dx24"Wx10"H and I realize most 11.2-11.4 receivers are about 20" deep except just a couple I've found including this Denon one. I don't have a place to add a media cabinet in this room, and the nearest room that I do is over 50' away.

  2. Does anyone have experience mounting TVs to rock? I was thinking I could make my stud locations known, and drill through the rock into studs and use some extra-long lags. I know that the TV is technically too high for my couch (52"CL instead of 40"CL), but there is also a bar height table that my wife and I sit at to watch TV behind it.

  3. Do I need to add some sound damping pads on the other side of my room? I don't know how much rock reflects sounds, but I'd like to keep that wall looking nice. The opposite side of the room has some wall space if that may be needed.

  4. The rest of my speakers will be in-wall/in-ceiling, should I add conduit from the receiver to the speakers while I have the walls off? Should I add conduit from my devices to the receiver and from the receiver to the TV? Not sure if this is necessary if the speaker wire is in-wall rated.

Thank you for your time, and please let me know if I am missing anything.

Is a ~20" deep shelf enough for a Denon AVR-X6800H receiver? Yeah, that should be fine. Looks like the X6800H is 15.3" deep. And I would want a couple more inches for cables coming out the back. Do I need to add some sound damping pads on the other side of my room? I don't know how much rock reflects sounds, but I'd like to keep that wall looking nice. The opposite side of the room has some wall space if that may be needed. Yep, there are some "ideal" locations to mount acoustic panels, and then there's putting them literally anywhere. And putting them literally anywhere is still much better than not having them at all. The rest of my speakers will be in-wall/in-ceiling, should I add conduit from the receiver to the speakers while I have the walls off? Should I add conduit from my devices to the receiver and from the receiver to the TV? Not sure if this is necessary if the speaker wire is in-wall rated. I would wire the entire room for 7.1.4 regardless of how much speakers you actually use. I would also run RCA cables to each of the four corners of the room for subwoofers. It doesn't matter if you actually have 4 subs or not. Having the placement flexibility is nice. And I would run two ethernet drops to the location with the equipment and one to the TV location. I don't think you actually need conduit going to every single speaker. However, it would be nice to have conduit from the location with the equipment to the location with the TV.

So we flipped it, but now our entertainment center can only be 16 inches deep in order to not run into the trim of the patio windows. So I feel like the fireplace will be sticking out too much in comparison to the built ins.
