My region (Northeast) has "meat trucks" that do sales every month or two in a parking lot. It sounds ridiculous because it's exactly what it sounds like - a truck full of meat in a parking lot of some random business (usually a grocery store or similar). They typically advertise in the local paper or a weekly paper called a "Merchandiser". They basically set up until the truck is empty - roughly about 2 days - but I get incredible deals on everything from ground beef to steak to sausage and ribs, basically paying maybe 60% of what you'd pay at a "traditional" store or butcher. You have to be careful because some of these "traveling sales" can have terrible quality, so it's about a 50/50 chance of getting actual quality meats. If you're diligent and informed about meats you should be able to spot when a deal is too good to be true. Well, it's an arithmetic problem. The first thing is to decide how big a portion is for you. Are these whole chickens, chicken breasts, thighs, drumsticks? What would be a typical size portion for you? Personally, I eat one thigh, 1/2 chicken breast, or two drumsticks as a serving. A whole chicken gives me five servings. Someone else might eat a different sized serving. The next thing is how often you intend to have it over the next three weeks. Every night? Three times a week? So, if I were buying chicken thighs to eat three times a week, I'd buy nine chicken thighs. If I ate two thighs as a serving, I'd buy 18 chicken thighs. Also if you're buying meat in bulk, don't forget to buy something to wrap it in, so you can put some in the freezer. I wrap each serving in plastic wrap, and then put the individual servings in a freezer bag. That way, I can pull one serving out at a time and cook it from frozen. I find if I cook a larger amount, I end up having seconds instead of leftovers, so I don't save any money or calories! More on reddit.com
