Looking at buying this through marketplace. Chatted with the owner a bit, and he mentioned there were no issues with the machine. I asked him if I could even bring some beans to test it out and he was cool with that as well, so I might check it out saturday morning.

I can't tell what model it is, but it looks like the entry level commercial grinder that I see on their website, and what I use at my local whole foods when I buy coffee there which usually gives me good results for coarse ground coffee, as I really only do cold brew. I see it's close to $1k new so this seems like a really good deal.
If this is legit and the machine works fine is it worth going for? Even if it needs to be repaired or upgraded slightly is it still worth it?
How would this compare to home coffee grinders like the Encore or the Virtuoso?

Two words: ground retention. You will lose a bit of grounds from most bunn commercials. $150 sounds fishy as well. Save up and get an encore. It's a good deal, but that low for a $1k grinder makes no sense. Burrs might be super dull too.

As long at motor works and it is in good working order that's a steal. This can quickly turn into a project though if you want to turn this into a bunzilla by either replacing the burrs with a set up ditting burrs with spacers or SSP burrs, which will run you another $300. And if you want really go for it align the burrs. All that work will reward you though with a great grind profile. Sure you will have some retention, but you will get retention on just about any home grinder on the market.

March 20, 2014 - Old Bunn Burrs: ... I am noticing an incredible amount of fines.. even after the 18 lbs of rice break-in. And the coarsest setting isn't nearly as coarse as it once was. Not sure if it is the burrs or the trifecta detent plate. The grind consistency photos are very deceiving. The cameras macro mode makes the grind size look a lot larger than in-person. On the coarsest setting, the grinder chute is just caked with fine dust.
