Looking at buying this through marketplace. Chatted with the owner a bit, and he mentioned there were no issues with the machine. I asked him if I could even bring some beans to test it out and he was cool with that as well, so I might check it out saturday morning.

I can't tell what model it is, but it looks like the entry level commercial grinder that I see on their website, and what I use at my local whole foods when I buy coffee there which usually gives me good results for coarse ground coffee, as I really only do cold brew. I see it's close to $1k new so this seems like a really good deal.
If this is legit and the machine works fine is it worth going for? Even if it needs to be repaired or upgraded slightly is it still worth it?
How would this compare to home coffee grinders like the Encore or the Virtuoso?

Two words: ground retention. You will lose a bit of grounds from most bunn commercials. $150 sounds fishy as well. Save up and get an encore. It's a good deal, but that low for a $1k grinder makes no sense. Burrs might be super dull too.

As long at motor works and it is in good working order that's a steal. This can quickly turn into a project though if you want to turn this into a bunzilla by either replacing the burrs with a set up ditting burrs with spacers or SSP burrs, which will run you another $300. And if you want really go for it align the burrs. All that work will reward you though with a great grind profile. Sure you will have some retention, but you will get retention on just about any home grinder on the market.

If you have the space, do it. Should be a big step up. Just make sure it runs, and bring some coffee to test grind. If it runs, buy it. Worst case scenario, you can resell it for at least what you paid (and probably more). You'll probably want to give it a very thorough cleaning if it's used. I'd recommend doing some research before taking the burrs off, they can be hard to align correctly when you remount them on the commercial grinders. Maybe use some grindz instead of taking out the burrs. I also think you can mod it to be a bunnzilla, but I vaguely recall that there's a complication with the G9. Home-Barista will have the answer. I don't know a lot about commercial coffee makers, but I have to imagine they're gonna brew coffee that's perfectly acceptable for (presumably free?) convenient coffee at work. I suppose you can play with the grind and see what happens, but using good beans is your best bet for getting better coffee. Your 7oz is closer to a more ideal ratio than 4 or 5oz for that much water; somewhere around 6oz or a little over is a good ballpark. I don't think rinsing the filter is going to be convenient or necessary. More on reddit.com

I have a mocamaster. I don't think 1 is big enough for commercial use. Basically one guy comes up and orders 4 cups for his family and then you're out and have to brew again. Gonna be a pain if you have a long line and everybody wants a coffee with their order. More on reddit.com

May 2, 2014 - I like the Grindmaster better for grinding coarse, and the Bunn for drip or a little finer. After all is said and done, either machine will suit your need for customer grinding. They won't break the bank like a Ditting or a Mahlkonig either. Are you purchasing new or used? If used, the cabinets come apart pretty easy(little time consuming), you can clean and inspect the wiring. I have only bought used ones, took them outside and used my leaf blower to clean out old ground coffee.
