BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS - Employment Situation Nov 2025 (direct link to report)
The number of people employed part time for economic reasons was 5.5 million in November, an increase of 909,000 from September. These individuals would have preferred full-time employment but were working part time because their hours had been reduced or they were unable to find full-time jobs. Danggggg I read this as a bunch of people who unexpectedly lost their job and are now giggin it to make ends meet, but it is definitely blunting some of the layoff impacts in the topline figures, no? Maybe also includes furloughed feds. More on reddit.com

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) jobs dataโ€”why itโ€™s a black box
This is a fun take, and clearly written by someone who has a) never been involved in survey production and b) never seriously worked with administrative microdata. More on reddit.com

What are your thoughts on The federal government (Bureau of Labor Statistics) announcing today that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created through March 2024 than previously reported and that Itโ€™s the largest downward revision in 15 years?
What are your thoughts on The federal government (Bureau of Labor Statistics) announcing today that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created through March 2024 than previously reported and that Itโ€™s the largest downward revision in 15 years? Revisions happen all the time. There are efforts in right-wing media to claim it shows some sort of dishonesty, or that revisions are all in one direction (they aren't). If this was exceptional, then I would encourage their management to review their methodology...but I won't assume that something was wrong with it. Such people tend to be dedicated to the goal of producing accurate statistics; their job is to be the speedometer, not to work the gas pedal. ...and that is an excellent reason to vote for Democrats. Democrats believe that these people should remain apolitical technocrats. Trump calls them 'the Deep State' and wants to be able to fire them for being 'disloyal' (aka publishing unflattering numbers). Lastly, we are below the natural rate of unemployment. The way it is expected to work is that -- when there are no shocks -- we constantly drift towards the natural rate of unemployment. That means we should expect unemployment to rise. It is kind of remarkable that it has stayed this low for this long. More on reddit.com
