Semi permanent color? Are you sure? If so, there’s a new name for semi color: direct dye, which is EXACTLY the same thing. So 2 professional (as in REAL pro products not the fake pro stuff from Sally’s or other beauty supply stores open to the public) products I highly recommend that will remove SEMI Permanent color (i.e. direct dye) are yes, Pulp Riot Blank Canvas, but you will need the 10 volume Pulp Riot developer (do NOT use cheap developer, trust me, it’s worth the investment and only then will the semi color come out 100%) and the Malibu DDL packets, (DDL = direct dye lifter) but you may need more than one packet depending on your length. 1 packet is about enough for one application on chin length hair, medium thickness. If hair is longer and thin/fine, you may be able to get away with less.. HOWEVER it’s essential to have a bit more than you need on hand, just in case. And you can always use the leftover (as in unopened packets) for the next boo boo. Neither the Pulp Riot Blank Canvas OR the Malibu DDL contain any bleaching agents whatsoever and both are designed to remove SEMI Permanent color, yes even BLACK. Blank Canvas will remove even black semi permanent color within 30 minutes. Malibu DDL may take more than one application for black, but will also remove it 100%. Whatever you do DO NOT use any remover from the drugstore or Sally’s....trust me on this. IF you want to protect the condition of your hair, you’ll avoid these at all costs. Why do you think they’re only $5 (and box dye only $5???) because yes, all removers from the drugstore/Sally’s contain bleaching agents PLUS they are designed to remove only permanent color. But first thing, you MUST find out for sure what formula of color you used or was used on you at a salon. I do have several trustworthy 3rd party ebay vendors who I promise sell only 100% authentic professional color/bleach, Olaplex 1/2, etc. Shipping takes about a week. But if you know someone who has a cosmetology license even if not for hair (like a facialist, nail artist etc) they can buy any pro product at pro only stores like Cosmoprof and Salon Centric and at wholesale (of course 3rd party sellers do markup the price and a lot in some cases). That aside, unless you know EXACTLY what formula of color is in your hair, I can’t advise you further until you do know. IF semi permanent color, then you can use ingredients from your pantry although there’s a specific way to do so that is the only way this method works: Mix equal parts white vinegar (NOT apple cider vinegar), baking soda, cheap clarifying shampoo ( like VO5 or Suave) and blue Dawn dish soap. Here’s approx amounts for short hair: 1 TBSP of each ingredient, more for longer hair accordingly. Put in baking soda first, then the white vinegar...yes, it’s gonna foam...let the chemical reaction subside and then add the clarifying shampoo and Dawn. Mix well and fast with a whisk since the baking soda will settle unless moving. Dump the mixture on DRY hair and be sure every single strand has been thoroughly saturated....cover with a thick shower cap OR at least 2 processing caps and then wrap hair in a turban or towel which seals in the heat from the scalp and this is what opens the cuticle and releases the color. Leave on for at least several hours, but the longer the better, just not overnight. You can use heat, if you have a heat cap, which will speed things up. But it will still take quite a while. It can get itchy too so leave on as long as you can stand it. Btw, the itchiness does pass. You can do this more than once per day or over the course of several days. NO damage (neither the Malibu or Pulp Riot Blank Canvas do any damage whatsoever either) but your hair’s gonna feel like hay because it’ll be very very dry. Just do a few hydrating deep conditioning treatments overnight 2-3 times and I also recommend a couple of jojoba hot oil treatments too, which will restore the hair’s lipid balance. I’ve had zero luck removing color with vitamin C and dandruff shampoo only with the combo of pantry ingredients above and trust me, it works even on demi permanent color. It just may take a few applicators so be patient. And of course, it’s pretty cheap too. With curly hair, hot oil treatments after ANY removal method are gonna be crucial since it’s a healthy lipid balance/barrier that makes curls springy and will bring back a curl pattern interrupted (or even destroyed) by chemical processing. The thing is, red (and of course any shade made up of red, like auburn and BURGUNDY) fades the fastest of any shade...red color molecules in permanent and demi permanent color are too large to truly penetrate the cuticle hence the fading issue. Of course when red is mixed with other shades like violet (burgundy =red/violet + brown) they can last a tad longer than a pure red. You can also use cheap clarifying shampoo every single wash and eventually this will pull ANY formula of color out, it will just take extreme patience on your part. Also do NOT NOT NOT use coconut oil ever.....it’s NOT hydrating because the molecules are too large to get into the hair and at best it merely coats the surface and temporarily can add SOME shine but it’s really drying for the vast majority of people so no clue why it’s such a trendy ingredient right now. Curly haired folks should avoid it in shampoo/conditioner and any treatments at all costs...(everyone should since coconut oil behaves like protein, which means you can get extreme dryness if it’s used too often OR you prove sensitive or intolerant to it-yes, there are lots of people like this ime). Do NOT buy any professional brand of color or bleach or remover on Amazon...fakes are everywhere. If you’re truly interested in any of the REAL pro products I mentioned, then dm me and I’ll pass on the vendor info. THere’s zero risk of getting a fake or expired product or even the OLD version of the newer formulas (amazon is where the old stuff goes to die btw and it’s usually well off it’s use by date too). I repeat, do NOT ruin your hair with any drugstore remover (or even color for that matter). Once you’ve removed the old color, which MUST be done before you can do another shade), l’d be happy to help you figure out your next hair color move. If you’re thinking of doing a “natural” shade (as in occurs in nature versus a fashion shade like purple), after a remover hair is much more porous and therefore absorbs color faster which means it can easily become too dark especially on mids/ends. The more damaged the less processing time required. Never use permanent color again, it’s only for two things: virgin hair and if you have more than 25% gray. That’s IT....at most a demi permanent formula is all you need and is translucent which is why a REAL pro brand provides such high wattage gloss and shine and it gets this because it seals the cuticle, which also preserves the curl pattern btw. I only and recommend a few truly excellent salon brands of color and I’ve personally used each and every one, either in the salon or on my own. It’s taken me nearly 15 years to curate my recommended list but I promise they are all incredible. There are awful, poor, fair, great and off the chain salon brands just like with anything else. And trust me, I’ve found some real FROGS along the way....I’ve added new brands and deleted others usually after a secret formula change, where the expensive awesome ingredients are taken out and replaced by cheap crappy ingredients usually as a cost cutting measure. Plus I’m my own colorist’s favorite guinea pig, I live right around the corner from his salon so can come over at the drop of a 🎩. Anyway, do NOT be in such a huge rush that you compromise your hair with a $5 box dye....It could take the skills of a very experienced corrective colorist to fix OR you’ll have to make the big chop. All because you didn’t have the patience to hold out for the great stuff. First, idk your budget but the Malibu DDL and Blank Canvas (use only the Pulp Riot Developer, no worries about a big bottle, you’ll use it up since it’s used with demi permanent color also and is really bomb quality) are excellent and either my first choices if budget permits. IF not, MY pantry recipe will still do the trick, it’ll just take longer. Dm me once you have the majority (or all) of the old color gone and we can chat about what your options are then.
