to me the key is to find something with cool brown undertones- i find the color needs a fair amount of blue in order to not show up fuschia on my face! have you tried glossier ultralip in pony (plummy taupe on me), glossier g suit in shift (described as burgundy but shows up as a straight red lip on me), or clinique almost lipstick in black honey (sheer neutral berry on me)? i also have success with reds that are described as "dirty red" or "dark red", as well as wines that are described as "oxblood" or "maroon", and have had my eye on ilia's lipstick in "rumba" for awhile now More on reddit.com

Burgundy IS wine. Your SIL is nonsensical and sounds impossible to please. If you feel bound to go, I would send her pics of potential dresses beforehand to mitigate the risk of her pitching a fit.
