For C++ you need a compiler. There are several that are free. And several that costs money. If you use Windows then the Microsoft Visual Studio community version is a good start. Some programmers prefer Linux. If you install Ubuntu or something like that, then you have an incredible amount of compilers, editors, libraries and tools available for free. More on reddit.com

If you're using windows I've written a guide on how to set up MinGW/GCC for my students There's no need to download an IDE; you can use whatever text editor you prefer.
