Hello. I have a laptop. It uses 24 pins usb c type connection to power itself up and charge the battery. Dropped the laptop and connector broke off the motherboard with all the pins. My question is. What pins provide power to the battery? I think I can connect red pins to the motherboard, but not sure if this is enough. Any help would be appreciated. Specially translating the meaning of pins. USB type C charger. Help to identify pins.
For charging you need all the vbus, all the grounds, and both CC pins (cc1/cc2). Also, the charge controller is inside your laptop, the external brick (probably) just provides 20vDC - so the only USB-C pins with a direct connection to the battery should be ground. More on reddit.com
LPT: If your USB-C charging cable becomes loose and wont stay in the phone port or maintain a connection, get a pin and work it around inside the port. The loose connection is likely caused by lint buildup and you should be able to fix it by fishing the stuff out.
PSA: A metal pin may damage the port. A wooden toothpick is better since it doesn't conduct and doesn't scratch. More on reddit.com
USB C male connector has 3 pins
3 Pins makes sense for a captive cable USB-C plug from a dedicated charger. Vbus and Ground are self explanatory. They're the charger's main power line and ground return. CC is the Configuration Channel pin, used for basic USB Type-C connection detection and USB PD communication. You don't need any other pins in a charger, as the charger has no data capability. That being said, I reiterate, do not attempt to repair this charger yourself. This is a 65W charger, meaning it's capable of 20V, and 3.25A output. You can easily screw something up in replacing even these 3 pins and soldering it and start a fire with that much voltage and power. If the plug is damaged, get rid of it, and just get yourself another 65W charger for your laptop. You're risking damaging your laptop for no good reason. More on reddit.com
USB-C Cables with Different Numbers of Pins
Yes USB 2.0 requires fewer pins compared to 3+. Also you can technically make a charge only cable by removing even more pins. Not compliant, but it works. Lots of phones only support usb 2 speeds. More on reddit.com

May 1, 2025 - The VBUS and GND pins are power and the return paths for the signals. The default VBUS voltage is 5 V but the standard allows the devices to negotiate and choose a VBUS voltage other than the default value. The Power Delivery allows VBUS to have a voltage up to 20 V. The maximum current could be also raised up to 5 A. Hence, the USB Type-C could deliver a maximum power of 100 W.

The USB Type-C specification does not require sinks to implement BC1.2 if they support CC pin detection. However, if the sink does not implement BC1.2, then only 500mA of maximum current can safely be drawn from a USB 2.0 source advertising a default current on the CC pin.

In the above scenario, one must consider whether proper protection is provided between the connectors and the transfer wire for ensuring both prolonged and safe use. Furthermore, as not all the existing products support USB Type-C, it is absolutely essential to verify the specification of the product on the other end of the transfer cable, so that you will not end up in an awkward situation by buying a charging device having a USB Type-C port on both ends which you cannot use.
