I am torn on refacing cabinets or starting all over.
We have a very similar kitchen! 50's, last redone in the 70's, scallops. We kept the frames - they were still very very solid - and got new doors and - importantly - new hinges with the nice slow-close feature. We got all new drawers, rather than just new fronts, in order to get modern roller mechanisms that are smooth and slow-close. We got a paneled dishwasher. We cut the scallops off but otherwise kept the piece of wood in place - it masks the over-sink light, got rid of the scallops over the stove too. We got a Cambria quartz countertop, and new sink, appliances, plugs, etc. We replaced the 70's so-linear wallpaper with tile. We painted the cabinets a nice very light blue. We got a new tea kettle, kept the dog. More on reddit.com

How Is Refacing Cabinets the Same Price as New?
I think it comes down to labor costs at the moment. It’s way faster to tear out and install new vs the work that goes into refacing. Since every industry is short on workers the more work it is to do the higher the cost will be right now. That’s just a theory though More on reddit.com

Should I try DIY cabinet refacing?
For many people, do it yourself, home improvement projects can be rewarding and typically more affordable than paying professional contractors to do the job. This is, of course, if the task at hand is relatively straightforward. However, refacing cabinets is a challenging project, and if mistakes are made, it can turn out more costly than using a professional service. Though you might save on labor by taking the DIY route, you’ll still need plenty of supplies and tools to complete the job, and purchasing them can be expensive. If you cheap out and buy all the products needed at the lowest pric

We install new doors and drawer fronts, then apply a veneer to update the cabinet face frames and new end panels. It's a cost-effective alternative to custom cabinets or a full remodel, ideal if you want to refresh your kitchen without major renovations. If you like the current layout of your kitchen but are hoping for a new door style or color, refacing is a great way to update your space.

Cabinets are solid but they are still over 40 years old. What I don’t like is the corner cabinets and all the small drawers everywhere.. I don’t mind the black granite counter but would prefer white top. Microwave will go in an island. Def new backsplash and removing scalloped piece. Range or keep wall ovens? What would you do? Start fresh or work with what I have? We plan on being in this house for at least 5 years maybe 10-15 years.

I like it… I’d usually say get rid of the scallop over the window, but here it adds just a bit of curviness and pattern in a space where everything else is squared off. Also if it’s 40 years old, it’s part of the history and vintage feel of the house. If you gut it and put jn an all new kitchen you may later regret taking away all the character and it will probably be dated by the time you sell. So I’d leave the cabinetry in place if it’s in good shape at least while doing other upgrades like adding your island. They’re probably better quality than modern stuff unless you got the budget to go custom. I think warm lighting, colourful accessories, upgrading cupboards and drawers with soft close drawers and decluttering will do a lot to improve function. The money you save could go into sexy pendants over your new island and will draw the eye - and you could even take them when you go.

Even DIYing with drawer conversions isn't worth it, because it's too much cost and work, to start with poorer quality materials to begin with. It's only a good option if the cabinets are pretty high quality, the layout is good, you have all the drawers and organizers already, and you are pretty darn skilled at woodworking, and spraying an industrial wood coating.

Replacing Cabinets Versus Refacing With Cabinet Fronts - Cabinet Now
You have a choice. You could tear out your old cabinets and put in new ones, or you can simply replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, also known as refacing them. Refacing your cabinet fronts is affordable and less invasive. It doesn't tear up your kitchen the way replacing the old cabinets would.
