What is the importance of calves muscles, how to improve power of calves?

I look at calves as extremely important to sprinting. My new regimen has more calf work than previous years. A couple ideas:

  1. Hold onto 65lb dumbbells and do calf raises. I do 3 sets of 25, by the 24th and 25th rep my legs and butt are burning in pain.

  2. Leg press, but don't move your whole leg like the normal leg press. Only extend with your toes, which removes your heel from the machine. Put as much weight on there so you can do 3 sets of 20.
