Has anyone here ordered California legacy plates (black with yellow lettering)? I'm looking for total fees and process associated with new sequential/custom plates. Should I wait until my registration is about to renew before ordering new plates... or does that not matter?

It looks like sequential and custom costs are the same?

It costs $50 to submit an application and $40 to pay registration on the plates, so total cost would be $90 out the door?

I just renewed my registration and have not yet placed the registration sticker on my current plates. The DMV.gov site says I can not order new plates if my current registration is expiring in the next 30 days (which it is), any insight on why that is?

If you have AAA go there and do it. They can order them for you and they will be deliver to AAA not the DMV. Then you don't have to deal with going to the DMV.

CA legacy plates faq. $50 for the plate is added to any other cost of registration.
If you're within 30 days, you must renew the registration first, then get the plates.

You have to wait for the default plates first. Then order the custom plates. For reference I took delivery 3/24. Got my default plates on 5/2. Ordered the custom plates same day (5/2) and still have not received the custom plates. They say it takes 8-12 weeks. It’s currently week 11 lol More on reddit.com

Yes you can order your plates. They take 5-8 weeks. You cannot pick them up until you have the sequential plates and registration from the DMV first. You have to hand over the two regular white plates and the registration card in exchange for your vanity plates and new registration. I just ordered my plates at AAA this past week. I haven’t gotten my sequential plates mailed to me yet. Edit: you don’t have to provide any vehicle information to order the plates. Just pick your plate and order. I would also set yourself an online appointment for 6-7 weeks out... no one likes to wait 6 hrs at the DMV to pick up plates. More on reddit.com
