* Note: California is different from other states in that it treats personal exemptions state tax exemptions as tax credits - which means that instead of deducting an amount from taxable income, the exemptions reduce your actual tax liability after it has been calculated. The standard deduction, which California has, is a deduction that is available by default to all taxpayers who do not instead choose to file an itemized deduction.

February 13, 2024 -
Hello everyone, I recently attempt to file my taxes and have a question about my state tax. I was wondering if anyone went through the same situation and knows anything about the following:
I moved out of California at the end of Aug 2023 to Florida for a new job. I made around $54,000 while in CA and had $2900 withheld.
When I was finalizing my state tax returns, I saw in the summary that I only got ~$1900 as the deduction using the CA standard deduction even though the standard deduction is ~$5300. I know I'm only a part year resident (64%) so I calculated that my deduction should be around $3400.
I don't get why my deduction is so low while using the standard deduction. Does anyone have an idea? Thank you in advance for your input! 🙏
