However, the app appears to limit me to adding 980,000 rupee at most in one transaction. If I were to add that, it would be at rate of 133.425 rupee per dollar. The fee to do so is $63.74. So it is saving you a fairly large amount compared to the $300 exchange rate loss plus any fees for the wire they may charge through PayPal as well if any. Nepalese rupee doesn’t appear to have all functions of the currencies I use in Wise app so please be sure to do your own due diligence that it would meet your needs. Paypal has bad currency exchange rates. Wise or Revolut are probably better options. Exchange rates from Revolut are in many cases better than Wise. With all rules regarding AML, questions can arise. Especially if the amounts are large. But that can happen with all parties. More on reddit.com

You can send money abroad to another PayPal account just like you would domestically:
Enter your recipient’s name, PayPal handle, email, or mobile phone.
Enter the amount, choose the currency, and add a note if you’d like.
Choose your payment type and payment method.
Review the transaction information, including all applicable fees, and select “Send”.
You can also send money to someone who doesn’t have a PayPal account with Xoom, a PayPal service. To transfer money internationally via Xoom in the PayPal app, go to the App menu and choose your preferred delivery option.

I am transferring US dollars from my bank in the US to an account in Nepalese rupees in Nepal. I recently found out you can use Paypal (technically Xoom, through Paypal) to wire money internationally. However, I noticed the currency conversion spread Paypal uses seems to me to be somewhat steep. If I recall, when I looked yesterday the average rate of Nepalese rupees to dollars was around 131/1, and Paypal was giving me something like 129/1, which would result in a loss of about $300 on a transfer of around $10,000. My question is, would it be any cheaper to go to the bank branch itself in the US and transfer it that way? What kind of currency spread to banks use when conducting international wires themselves?

Xoom doesn't do wires. Not every international transfer is a wire. Wire is expensive: wire transfer fees + you lose on conversion rate. Any remit app will beat wires: wise.com , remitly, riamoneytransfer, etc. For wise, you need to use domestic wire transfer to their American account, which costs you $20. Other apps just do ACH pulls from your US bank accounts (not wires).
