Setting up a new M2 MBP on MacOS 15.1 and noticed I couldn't access Spotify.com with Safari. Not a huge problem just annoying. I figured I could just install the client instead of relying on the web player and that's when things got weird.
I tried to access the downloads page on Spotify.com via google link and that wouldn't load either. Ok fine, I've used macupdate.com forever and figured I could get the client app from there. No dice. The download just sat idle and wouldn't load. I guess the macupdate is just a link to download from the Spotify servers and Safari is just blocking the entire Spotify domain, even the support pages. All that is to say that everything works as expected as soon as I tried it with Firefox.
I realize that Spotify is a direct competitor to apple music and as such they won't allow it on the MacOS App Store, even though it is on the iOS App Store. I know and fully understand this kind of f#%&ery is normal from Apple but this just feels egregious, even for them. I would love to hear from anybody else who has a workaround besides just using another browser. Spotify does list Safari 15 and newer as a supported browser but I got tired of trying to figure out a workaround when I would have installed Firefox eventually anyway.
A lot of Mac users still get confused about the right way to install Spotify, so here’s a quick version that actually works.
1. Why use the desktop app instead of the web player?
The app runs smoother, sounds better, and lets you download songs for offline listening. The web player can’t do that and sometimes lags in Safari.
2. How to install Spotify on Mac (official way)
Go to spotify.com/download
Click Download for Mac
Open the
.dmgfile and drag Spotify to your Applications folder That’s it. You don’t need to use the App Store — it’s usually outdated there.
3. Need an Older Version?
If your macOS is too old for the latest Spotify, check Spotify’s official community forum. They sometimes post older installers that still work. Avoid random links from other sites — they’re risky.
4. How to “Download” Spotify Music
Option 1: If you have Premium, turn on Offline Mode in Settings. That’s the official, safe way.
Option 2: Some users prefer tools like NoteBurner Spotify Music Converter for more flexibility (for example, saving tracks as MP3 or AAC). It’s not an official Spotify feature, but many people find it reliable for personal use.
Hope this saves someone a bit of time — took me longer than expected to figure all this out myself.
I recently bought my first MacBook. I am in love with the machine, but there is one problem I noticed when using Spotify. It seems a bit 'glitchy'
For example sometimes its unresponsive, sometimes if I play audio from a different tab and try and go back to the music, it takes a lot of clicking around and playing with the controls to get the music back on. The rest of the controls feel so fluent and predictable, its just using Spotify that feels clunky.
I much prefer using the app like on my phone, but there doesn't seem to be a Spotify app available for the MacBook.
Has anybody else experienced this or knows of a way to fix it?
