My friend is getting married late June amd advised that the attire should be smart but casual, no fancy suits etc. My wife has purchased a navy blue dress and some pink heels. I was thinking of going with Khakis, Oxfords, a shirt and a tie. I was thinking a tie with navy blue stripes would be good. Help appreciated.

Smart but Casual. I wonder if it needs to be more smart or more casual. I'd probably go for Chinos, A really casual blazer (unstructured, patch pockets), a casual shirt (Oxford is a no brainer but I'd prefer a polka dot shirt) and minimal white sneakers because why not. What you do is your choice.

You'd probably fit in but I could never go to a wedding like that. I may be biased here because I went to a high school that required oxfords, slacks, shirt, tie, and I've spent the last 7 years in an office with the same dress code. But I think that a shirt and tie without a jacket is a bad look. I'd much rather see you dump the tie and add a nice light weight, unlined / unstructured, navy blazer. Edit: what kind of oxfords are we talking here? This would be a great chance to wear something a little more fun. Like blue rough out / suede / nubuck / derby. We’re having a small wedding at a bed and breakfast. We want people wearing suits and dresses, but I HATE khakis and don’t want it in any pictures lol. How do I word the invitation to make that clear but also not sound like an asshole? Cocktail? Formal? Guests don’t need tuxes or ball gowns but khakis are a hard no. Thanks in advance!

I might be in the minority, but as a guest I always prefer detailed instructions so I know I’m interpreting the dress code correctly. So if you said formal or semi-formal (whichever you think fits) and added “this means x type of dresses and suits or suit pants. Please no jeans or khakis.” I know some ppl say the specific instructions seem demanding or rude but I truly don’t understand that as a guest.
