In 1946 he starred in a play about black-white relations, On Whitman Avenue, topping that later in the year with a dazzling performance—in whiteface—playing opposite the celebrated actress Elisabeth Bergner in The Duchess of Mal fi. It was the first time a black actor had appeared on the American stage in a white role. “The choice was made simply on Canada Lee’s outstanding histrionic ability,” the London Daily Telegraph reported.
