It really depends on what you are shooting and for what purpose. Are you shooting outside in the desert for the web? Inside a house for a film? Are you having issues with shadows? Have you shot tests? What's your post workflow? All of these are important. And it may depend on the camera. The R5 for example does not max out the dynamic range of Clog-3. People also ask

What is the difference between Canon Log, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3?

The original Canon Log delivers a dynamic range of approximately 12 stops, Canon Log 2 up to 16 stops, and Canon Log 3 up to 14 stops. Canon Log 2 retains more detail in darker areas than Canon Log 3 but also features an elevated noise floor. Canon Log 3 is easier to grade thanks to producing a cleaner image and retains the same amount of highlight information as Canon Log 2.

Which Canon Log is best for low light?

Canon Log 2 is the ideal choice for when maximum detail is required, particularly in low-light scenes to extract shadow information. However, it will also cause elevated noise in those darker regions of the image and therefore require more time in post-production.

February 4, 2023 -

Hi I’m new to the whole high end camera thing. When I first got into shooting videos all the YouTubers were talking about C-log 3 when reviewing canon cameras. I recently for the first time heard about C-log 2. Is the difference that noticeable? What would be the differences?

r/canon on Reddit: What are some of the pros and Cons of using Clog2 over clog3? Just the dynamic range?
February 3, 2025 - If you're one of the weirdos that don't like using Color Space Transform or LUTs to convert to Rec709, it takes more work to grade Clog2. Most Canon cameras don't have Clog2 anyway, Clog3 is good enough for just about anything except high end work.

Canon C300 mkii Log Log2 or Log3 which is best?
With the LUT applied and at 2 stops and more under exposed, there was some noise when using the LOG2 curve, but the LOG 3 curve looked less noisy. For many situations I would prefer to trade the extra stop of dynamic rage gained by using LOG2 for the cleaner shaddow areas that LOG3 provides. The original Canon LOG is still available and is probably closer to LOG3 than LOG2.

Comparing C Log Profiles on the C300 Mark II
December 18, 2017 - The C300 Mark II, the C700, and the C200 all record at much higher bit rates than the C100, 5D MKIV, or C300, and thus can be pushed around a lot more in post-production. C Log 2 takes all of this new-found potential and hands it straight to the end user. Canon has created a very hands-off profile that is super flat and gives the colorist or editor a huge amount of post-production flexibility.

August 2, 2016 - For those of you who’ve missed our post on firmware version v.1.0.4.1.00 for the C300 Mark II, the latest firmware adds some very significant new features to the Canon C300 Mark II – primarily a brand new LOG gamma curve called Canon LOG 3. In addition, shadow and mid-tones noise in Canon LOG 2 (which was one of the major complaints from users as Canon LOG 2 is rather an aggressive curve) has been reduced, while focus magnification in the EVF has been added amongst a host of other new features concerning Dual-Pixel AF support with the new CN-E 18-80mm compact servo and CN7x17 17-120mm cine servo zoom.

Each folder (17-grid, 33-grid, and 65-grid) have the same LUTs; the 65 grid uses more points to grade your video, however, you may not need as much information when grading your footage.
