To me, it seemed like the Canon R was a half-spirited attempt at a full-frame mirrorless. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a decent camera but they’ve come a long way with the R6 and R5. The R had a recycled sensor pulled from the 5D IV which is why the dynamic range isn’t great. That sensor is several years old now, too. The R6 II would be a pretty significant upgrade all around. Better AF, better DR, better low-light capabilities, better ergonomics. Do it. I work at a camera store and need to keep an unbiased opinion about all camera systems. Considering upgrading from EOS R to R6 MKII

What’s the next big Upgrade? Currently shooting on the EOS R
There’s nothing wrong with EF Lenses, especially the L Series, which is decent! I believe the R6 Mark III is the next big thing on Canons agenda, and this could potentially lead to a price drop for the Mark II. Perhaps you should wait for either that or consider the Mark III. More on reddit.com

What to Purchase - EOS R5 vs R6 vs R6 Mark II vs R - Canon Community
August 21, 2024 - Don't get me wrong, I use the R5 for wildlife when the time is right but prefer the R6. And your EF lenses should work great as long as they are not dated/old. The Canon adapter works perfectly with Canon and 3rd party EF mount lenses. In my opinion the EF-EOS R adapter is the way to go, the Control Ring adapter design is fiddly and difficult to find easily as it sits right on the camera body.

r/canon on Reddit: EOS R upgrade to R6 Mark II?
November 14, 2022 -

Been shooting with the EOS R for the last few years while overseas. I typically use it for street photography, portrait and some concert photography. Very rarely do I use it for sport or extreme action shots.

I've been on the fence the last few weeks with upgrading from the EOS R to the R6 Mark II. I can get around $900-1000 for my R so upgrading to the R6 Mark II would be roughly a $1500 upgrade.

My biggest gripes with the EOS R have been its autofocus unreliability in street settings while I'm moving. Very rarely on busy streets do I have time to stop, set and shoot and I think the new subject tracking on the R6 Mark II might help with that with the tracking and IBIS. I also have not been a big fan of the feel of the EOS R vs when I had the 5D Mark III in terms of usability and physical placement of controls. Last gripe I have with the EOS R is just the dynamic range isn't the best and in situations where I'm dealing with dark shadows and bright LEDs that matters a lot to me.

So wanted to get input from ya'll to see what might be the way to go. Unfortunately I dont have a lot of time to wait after release because I'll be back overseas to shoot 2 weeks after it releases.

Thanks for your time!

The Canon EOS R6 III is available at a recommended price of $2799, a $300 premium over the Mark II's launch price. The EOS R6 II has formally dropped to a $2299 price point. The EOS R6 III did well at almost every test we put it through, from shooting stills to filming several videos.

canon r6 mark iii vs canon eos r — Blog — Myles Katherine Photography
January 25, 2026 - I always use a zoom lens as my main lens, and I currently shoot with the Canon 28-70 f/2 USM lens. It’s a HUGE lens, but it’s incredible. It’s a bit too big for the EOS R though, which is a pretty small camera, but I think it would work with the R6 Mark III, which has a larger, sturdier body.

r/canon on Reddit: Is the R6 Mark III a significant upgrade from the EOS R?
March 2, 2026 -

Hello everybody,

I was thinking of upgrading from my EOS R and getting the greatest and latest (mid-tier) mirrorless. Looking at the R6 Mark II, specifically, I'm not convienced it would be a worthy upgrade since it has a 26MP sesnor compared to the R's 30.

I do all types of photography, mainly travel and street but sometimes I'm hired for events and do portraits as well. Would the R6 Mark III, with an overall more advanced sensor than the R, be an upgrade in terms of pure image quality for large prints? I understand AF and low-light capabiliteis have come a long way but just in terms of pure results in the image, would I see a difference?

I know it's a nuanced question and it depeds on the lense I'm working with and my skills as a photographer, etc, etc. but this whole deal is overwhelming and I just know I want to upgrade for sure since I may be going on Safari soon and I want to invest on having something I know for sure is more than capable of capturing the trip.

Thank you in advance.

EOS R6 Mark II or Mark III? - Canon Community
November 9, 2025 - I have a Canon 7D II and several good EOS EF lenses, including two L lenses. Heading to Kenya in winter for a safari and considering upgrade of camera body. With new R6 model, there are some deals on Mark II. Just not sure the extra money is worth it. I’ll following along to see what the experts say. I plan to use old lenses with adapter, since my go to lens will be a 70-200 F2.8 L IS. Same lens in RF is steep $. I also own a 2X Extender.

I got the R in 2018 and really liked it a lot. I sold my 5D4 to get it and I think it has the same sensor, which I really liked on both bodies. I still had a 7D2 which despite the R's awful fps and blackout the 7D2 never came out of the bag again. AF was just too much fun. I shot BIF with a converter, my EF 100-400 II a a 2X TC. The RF 24-105 f4 and the R was just a sweet combo. There have been times I sold the R. In 2019 I sold the 7D2, the R and all my EF gear and picked up the R5 and 100-500 and RF 1.4. The lens came first and I loved it on the R. I really can't describe it but I was not as thrilled with the R5 as I was with the R for IQ. There was nothing wrong with the R5 but I can't describe it. I sold my R5 for the R6II and R7. I was a little worried about 24mp. 30mp seems is the sweet spot for me. I've seen so many fantastic shots from the 1Dx and high end R bodies I decided to go for it. It did not disappoint. You will really like the AF. In the spring I handed my R7 over to my dealer for an in store credit and just called him to put me on the list for the R6III. I've decided I'm going for it and will think about a crop body. Moving forward one body may be enough for me. Here is a shot with my R6II and RF 24-105. I was doing some urban shooting in Spain and heard all this racket. Parakeets that were once pets were released and have now overrun the area. I took a shot anyway. I normally don't crop this much.

That is really good. If you haven't already done so, you should run Denoise AI on it, export it as a 16bit Tiff, then Super Resolution on the Tiff. I had already run Denoise when I posted this shot in the monthly R images threads. It was a DNG as it was before the new no DNG Denoise Process wich shouldn't make a big difference. I ran it through as a 16 bit TIFF using this new process I found the other day. The actual process starts at 5:20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeg8kPfRws0 From this thread. I created a preset so it's really fast and the TIFF lands besides the original RAW file. https://rfshooters.com/threads/crop-or-upscale-for-web-presentation.5500/#post-31767

February 4, 2026 - In contrast, the Canon EOS R6 Mark III has a hybrid construction combining a magnesium-alloy chassis with a lighter, slightly less durable polycarbonate shell. The build quality is robust, but the R6 Mark III can’t take a beating like the EOS R5.

r/Cameras on Reddit: Trying to decide between Canon EOS R6 and EOS R. How much would one notice the 20 vs 30 megapixels? Any other thoughts on them?
July 15, 2024 -

Been shooting with a 5DII. So either camera I think will feel like an upgrade in basically every regard. But I'm a little caught on how much the potential to zoom with those extra pixels might be missed if I go with the R6. Can't really think of other reasons to go with the R and I think I like the interface/controls of the R6 better (haven't held one yet but plan to shortly). Video and stills both appeal to me and are important. I know the R is a bit more affordable too, but I've found what I think is a great deal on the R6 at about $1200. Any thoughts, suggestions, discussion very much appreciated!
