r/canon on Reddit: Filming with EOS RP
May 23, 2024 -

Hello Lovely people,

I am currently trying to film using my EOS RP camera, I have the camera connected directly to my computer via USB cable, I can take pictures just fine and they save directly to the desktop, but when it comes to the filming I keep getting a "capture failed" error. Online resources tell me to insert a memory card, I thought that because I have it connected directly to the desktop that I would not need to have a card as I want to save it to the desktop and not a memory card.

does anyone have any advice?

July 18, 2022 - An RP kit goes for $1300, it's certainly not really a good value for video shooting if your budget is, say, $1500 ... In my mind kit means everything, I’ve just graduated uni doing a media degree and looking to spend money a camera for documentary film so think I should be less worried in kit

How the Canon EOS RP Enables Hassle-Free Filmmaking
April 1, 2019 - Recording with minimal noise is also possible, thanks to the wide range of ISO sensitivities in the EOS RP: in 4K, it’s between 100 – 12,800, whereas the ISO range can be expanded up to 102,400 for full HD movies. This means that you can shoot films at any time of the day and in dimly-lit venues!

r/canon on Reddit: best use of Canon RP for video
July 25, 2022 -

Hey all

my friend wants me to record a concert, I've got a Canon RP. I almost exclusively use it for photos so I need advice on the best use for it.

Do I need the webcam kit? (plug in battery, USB cable?)

Should I just run it raw w/o anything plugged into it and hope for the best?

I definitely want at least 4k/30 (edited from 60 my bad). My memory card says it can do over 2 hours on it (it's a big one) so I should be good there, right?

Im' running it right now for a 15 minute test to see battery drain/quality/etc.

Thanks in advance for your tips.

A few things to note: The dummy battery might be useful, since it will address the relatively short battery life. The USB cable will not be useful, as the webcam software is limited to under 720p. You're out of luck for 4k60. The RP maxes out at 4k24 That 4k24 is significantly cropped, and doesn't allow you to use dual-pixel AF. That last part won't really matter if you're shooting in a stationary location, but might cause issues with a moving camera. The RP can't record videos longer than 29:59, so if their set is longer, you'll need to stop recording and start a new recording at some point. Recording externally with a monitor bypasses this, but I'm guessing you don't have one, since you mostly shoot stills.

I think quantum has some good things to consider. I would also try and think about what kind of thing(s) your friend is expecting. What are your audio needs? Because if they are expecting you to record audio, then you'll need a better mic than the one that is in-camera: Rodevideo Mic Go II ($100) is my favorite, but the micro version ($50) is also good. I'd also make sure you know what the venue is like? Is it a coffeehouse? where they will be stationary or is it more of a sound stage, where they can move on the stage. Do you think that you're going to have to move a lot in-between songs. If you are going to be moving, I would look at some techniques on YouTube to help stabilize the footage. If your friend has a set-list, that might help manage your 30min time limit (help you decide which songs to start/stop. I would not just record up until you hit 30min!.. in between songs so there's no break). You mentioned using your camera mostly for photos... I imagine your friend would want pictures too?? Having a set-list will help determine which songs to record video, which ones to take pictures for (maybe your friend has a preference) Lastly, you also have to think about what is going to happen post-event. How do you plan on editing the video afterwards? If you don't have a dedicated software, I strongly suggest using DaVinci. What device are you planning on editing on? Laptop or dedicated PC? You mentioned wanting to do 4k/30... I know that is what everyone likes to shoot in... BUT if you don't have a computer that can handle that kind of video footage, the post processing can be painful!! I'd suggest just using 1080 until you get some experience with your workflow. I've never used the RP, but I believe 1080 also has the added benefit that there is no crop...

So I know this is covered in the FAQ tab but my question is still unanswered.

I saw the Canon EOS RP secondhad with 2 lenses ( RF 24-105 f4 L and EF 50 f1.8) and the mount. (and some batterys and charger and a sd card. For 1850 euro.

I'm mostly into filming, but I like taking photo's a lot as well. I've read quite some negative feedback on the new RP from canon...

Can anyone please tell me if this is a good buy or not?

Why the Canon EOS RP Sucks for Video | Fstoppers
February 18, 2019 - Software was there from the start. Canon had to remove stuff from it. ... Not everyone Cares about high quality video!!!! Or any video. A little sick of "reviews" crapping on everything that doesn't meet their needs as a vlogger or "film maker" if you want 4k or 120 and log buy a camera that does that don't crap ones that don't. You think Canon cares what people say tons of parents looking for a camera will love the RP and probably don't give a dam if it shoots any video.

Because 6mo ago Canon DSLRs were real cameras... ... It will be bad for a Sony user to pick up a EOS RP in the camera store as it may glue to their hands. Bad experience! ... fatdeeman, I think so. After all, they spent all the development budget on a software engineer going through firmware removing parts of the EOS-R code.
