Canon RP Ultimate Review - Tech Gear Talk
September 25, 2019 - This is something that I absolutely love and use all the time in the Canon cameras that offer it. Just like the EOS R, we have in-body time lapse in both Full HD (1080) pand 4k which I absolutely love.

Just the video quality is fine if you use the Technicolor Cinema Style and tweak the sharpness settings in the camera (set them higher, because the video of the RP is on the soft side).

Video capability of RP
Canon EOS R8 Canon RF 35mm F1.8 ... IS STM Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM +2 more ... I have the RP (replaced my EOS M5) and I think the RP is great for video. But it also depends on what you're shooting. I mainly use the RP for my YouTube videos at 1080p. Definitely a huge step up from the M5. I don't shoot at 4K because there's a huge crop factor and the 1080p quality is good for ... best use of Canon RP for video
A few things to note: The dummy battery might be useful, since it will address the relatively short battery life. The USB cable will not be useful, as the webcam software is limited to under 720p. You're out of luck for 4k60. The RP maxes out at 4k24 That 4k24 is significantly cropped, and doesn't allow you to use dual-pixel AF. That last part won't really matter if you're shooting in a stationary location, but might cause issues with a moving camera. The RP can't record videos longer than 29:59, so if their set is longer, you'll need to stop recording and start a new recording at some point. Recording externally with a monitor bypasses this, but I'm guessing you don't have one, since you mostly shoot stills. More on reddit.com

Canon RP as my first camera? Should I buy it?
RP is great for portraits, street photography, landscapes, etc. Not so good for wildlife and action. No downside for an adapter. Log should not be a limiting factor for your discribed use Unless you're trying to do slowmo, frame rate should be a non issue I haven't had hands on with the r10 of course, but either should meet your needs fine More on reddit.com

June 4, 2019 - The EOS RP can only capture 4K video at 23.98p (or 25p for PAL) and only offers Full HD capture at 29.97p and 59.94p. For a novice, frame rates are generally either ignored or not understood at all, so it’s possible that the target market ...

July 18, 2022 - You’ll need a few other things to make it work well like lots of batteries but it’s hard to beat the quality per dollar. I’d also consider a c100 mark 2. Use that to earn some money and then upgrade. And remember the lenses make a ton of difference and over time you’ll want to invest more in lenses than cameras. ... This. I owned an RP and used it for some casual things, but I wouldn't want it to be my only camera. I agree that a pocket 4k will serve you much better. More replies ... I wanted a full frame camera that can do video as well.

September 4, 2020 - Bottom line- if you can afford it, the “L” in L glass probably stands for “Luxury”. The real Achilles heel of the EOS RP, to most photographers, will likely not be its dynamic range or its high ISO noise, but its 4K video specs.

Remember that the RP doesn't have in-body stabilization, so you'll want to use a stabilized lens for handheld video. Our test footage was shot with a lens without IS, the RF 28-70mm F2 L USM, so it's a bit shaky. Aside from the lack of IBIS—Canon plans on adding the tech to future EOS R cameras, but I'd be surprised to see it in a body this small—the 1080p quality ...

Canon EOS RP review
While it’s tempting to draw ... even the Canon EOS R, it’s important to remember that the EOS RP isn’t really in the same bracket as those cameras. Accordingly, while its performance seems comparatively unspectacular in some respects, the RP performs quite well for a camera in its category – particularly when it comes to shooting stills. In terms of image quality, file fidelity ... The Canon EOS RP is small, affordable and versatile. It's not cutting edge tech, but the cheaper it gets, the more we like it

IF ONLY THERE WAS DPAF IN 4K! the r also felt good. the menus are simple. is the video soft?

Why the Canon EOS RP Sucks for Video | Fstoppers
February 18, 2019 - The EOS RP doesn't film 1080p at 24fps. Yes, you read that correctly. The camera that changed the video world, the Canon 5D Mark II, was released over 10 years ago had 24fps in Full HD. Furthering the confusion, it does shoot 25p (PAL) for our friends across the Atlantic.

The 4k on the RP has no usable autofocus, if you need AF: stick to 1080p.

It's a bit frustrating for video.

In default 1080p has great dual pixel AF, EIS and zero crop. It's really easy to shoot video in 1080p mode. But it looks kind of soft. 1080p Video from my older Panasonic m4/3 cams looks noticeably sharper. Even with sharp primes or L lenses.

4K mode video looks really nice and sharp. MUCH better than 1080p. But it has a massive 1.7x crop. So the widest you can get from that 24-105 in 4K mode is about 40mm equivalent. Forget shooting indoors with that crop. Many people end up buying EF-S lenses like 10-18 or 18-55 as a cheap way to get around the crop factor.

And to make it even worse, the dual pixel AF doesn't work in 4K mode. So you pretty much have to manual focus. Also, 4K is only possible in the specific video mode on the dial. The quick access video record button only does 1080p.

For the price, there are a lot of better options if video is a priority. Most similarly priced crop cameras will do better video quality. Possibly even some 1" compacts.

Gordon Laing posted some video samples in 4K and 1080p. You can see how much softer the 1080p is as well as how huge the difference in crop factor is.

r/canon on Reddit: best use of Canon RP for video
July 25, 2022 -

Hey all

my friend wants me to record a concert, I've got a Canon RP. I almost exclusively use it for photos so I need advice on the best use for it.

Do I need the webcam kit? (plug in battery, USB cable?)

Should I just run it raw w/o anything plugged into it and hope for the best?

I definitely want at least 4k/30 (edited from 60 my bad). My memory card says it can do over 2 hours on it (it's a big one) so I should be good there, right?

Im' running it right now for a 15 minute test to see battery drain/quality/etc.

Thanks in advance for your tips.

I think quantum has some good things to consider. I would also try and think about what kind of thing(s) your friend is expecting. What are your audio needs? Because if they are expecting you to record audio, then you'll need a better mic than the one that is in-camera: Rodevideo Mic Go II ($100) is my favorite, but the micro version ($50) is also good. I'd also make sure you know what the venue is like? Is it a coffeehouse? where they will be stationary or is it more of a sound stage, where they can move on the stage. Do you think that you're going to have to move a lot in-between songs. If you are going to be moving, I would look at some techniques on YouTube to help stabilize the footage. If your friend has a set-list, that might help manage your 30min time limit (help you decide which songs to start/stop. I would not just record up until you hit 30min!.. in between songs so there's no break). You mentioned using your camera mostly for photos... I imagine your friend would want pictures too?? Having a set-list will help determine which songs to record video, which ones to take pictures for (maybe your friend has a preference) Lastly, you also have to think about what is going to happen post-event. How do you plan on editing the video afterwards? If you don't have a dedicated software, I strongly suggest using DaVinci. What device are you planning on editing on? Laptop or dedicated PC? You mentioned wanting to do 4k/30... I know that is what everyone likes to shoot in... BUT if you don't have a computer that can handle that kind of video footage, the post processing can be painful!! I'd suggest just using 1080 until you get some experience with your workflow. I've never used the RP, but I believe 1080 also has the added benefit that there is no crop...
