As it has been with everything else, including cameras... one should always install current firmware updates. It also resolves problems one may not even know about. Of course, you don't have to. I don't know how quickly they update the camera documentation, if its updated maybe there is something else you need to enable for it to work. Also, was your flash in TTL or M mode? It may only work if the flash is in TTL mode (which I never use). Just making guesses here. More on reddit.com

I just got an email for new firmware update for R6 II with #5 as the reason why I wanted to upgrade. I thought this would fix the issue of the camera disabling simulated exposure when a flash is attached. I updated firmware, checked the simulated exposure settings and nothing's changed and the camera still does the same thing. I guess #5 is useless still?

Am I missing any major fixes or enhancements from the later updates?

A brand new camera, there is zero risk to updating the firmware. If it bricks it, send it back for replacement. Once out of warranty, I would only update if it fixes a bug you have or adds a feature important to you. I haven't installed the latest R5 firmware because I don't care about anything they changed
