Picture Styles in-body presets worth it?
I shoot jpegs whenever I'm not shooting professionally so I've created my own picture styles with the Picture Style Editor software supplied by Canon for a consistent look to my personal images. So many people are obsessed with shooting RAW who will never advise shooting in jpeg but there are times when I don't want to sit and edit every single photo I've taken, especially if I'm not getting paid for it! Picture Styles don't really need to be considered if you are just shooting RAW though. More on reddit.com

August 27, 2025I'm trying to register new picture style in my Canon 1300D using it's EOS utility. The software seems to be fine with downloading files and remote shooting but the options in camera settings is disabled, how do I make it work?

I had the same issue trying to get EOS Utility to recognise my G5X Mark II. However, when I saw that Canon had released the Picture File Registration Tool, it worked fantastic. Applying (for example) the Monochrome Picture Style in-camera is a great way of assessing whether you're getting the look you're after, with the option to fine-tune in DPP or even revert to colour and convert manually using your preferred conversion method to get exactly the effect you wanted. Picture Style files downloaded from the Canon Picture Style website which have the .pf2 or .pf3 extension can also be used with DPP and EOS Utility.

I have never looked at picture styles presets in the camera settings as I shoot raw.
Watching videos on YouTube lately and reading around the internet I'm now wondering if I should take them into account even if I shoot raw, or are they only a thing for JPEGs straight out of the camera?

And there are about 100 presets built in to LR and 100 million available online.
