To me, it seemed like the Canon R was a half-spirited attempt at a full-frame mirrorless. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a decent camera but they’ve come a long way with the R6 and R5. The R had a recycled sensor pulled from the 5D IV which is why the dynamic range isn’t great. That sensor is several years old now, too. The R6 II would be a pretty significant upgrade all around. Better AF, better DR, better low-light capabilities, better ergonomics. Do it. I work at a camera store and need to keep an unbiased opinion about all camera systems. The R-to me-was not a great camera. The R6 and the soon to be released R6 II are. Answer from Ciggytardust1 on reddit.com

r/canon on Reddit: EOS R upgrade to R6 Mark II?
November 14, 2022 -

Been shooting with the EOS R for the last few years while overseas. I typically use it for street photography, portrait and some concert photography. Very rarely do I use it for sport or extreme action shots.

I've been on the fence the last few weeks with upgrading from the EOS R to the R6 Mark II. I can get around $900-1000 for my R so upgrading to the R6 Mark II would be roughly a $1500 upgrade.

My biggest gripes with the EOS R have been its autofocus unreliability in street settings while I'm moving. Very rarely on busy streets do I have time to stop, set and shoot and I think the new subject tracking on the R6 Mark II might help with that with the tracking and IBIS. I also have not been a big fan of the feel of the EOS R vs when I had the 5D Mark III in terms of usability and physical placement of controls. Last gripe I have with the EOS R is just the dynamic range isn't the best and in situations where I'm dealing with dark shadows and bright LEDs that matters a lot to me.

So wanted to get input from ya'll to see what might be the way to go. Unfortunately I dont have a lot of time to wait after release because I'll be back overseas to shoot 2 weeks after it releases.

Thanks for your time!

R6 vs R6 iii: worth the upgrade?
Main thing to ask yourself when a new model comes out. What does this do that the current model doesn’t and is it imperative that you have that thing. Only you can answer that question. For myself (hobbyist level r6m1 owner) the answer was no, I don’t need the new camera. That money that I would spend to upgrade can instead go towards a trip somewhere to use said camera More on reddit.com

Used R6 vs New R6 Mk II
The original R6 is still a fantastic camera despite being superseded. Most of the significant upgrades in the Mk II version pertain to video use—there are only minor differences between stills shooting with the R6 and R6 II. Unless you're planning extensive video use, there's probably not much to be gained in spending the extra GBP1200 on an R6 II. More on reddit.com

Canon R6 vs R6 Mark ii
You have two choices here- go with the mark 2 with its faster speeds slightly better autofocus system and a little bit more megapixels, or stick with the original generation, and use the extra money on another lens / flash etc that you could use. As a pro, that's a bigger debate than it would be for someone like me..... I went with the R6 and two extra lenses. So now I use a wide L zoom on my rp, and a 70-200 F4L on a r6. That covers 98% of my shooting needs. I have the Canon sling bag and put each body with those respective lenses in it and I just have to take out whichever camera body I need to get the shot. And I still have room to throw a prime in the sling bag as well. If I want to pack more lenses I put everything in a larger camera specific backpack. As a pro if you don't already have the longer telephoto, you'll want to get one of those as well. As a pro, if I were on a budget, I would go with the original R6 and the 70-200F4 or 2.8. If I wasn't on a budget I would go Mark ii and 70-200f2.8. More on reddit.com

Canon R6 vs. R6 Mark II
January 15, 2026 - It’s not about the specs on paper — it’s about how those specs hold up in the real world of 12-hour wedding days. When the Canon R6 launched in 2020, it quickly became one of the most loved cameras for wedding photography. I can say from personal experience that it still holds its ground today. 20.1MP sensor: Sounds modest compared to some competitors, but plenty for albums, wall prints, and online galleries. Honestly, your clients don’t care about megapixels — they care about moments. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II: Autofocus is snappy and reliable, even in near darkness.

November 2, 2022 - There's also no longer a 30-min time limit on recording as on the original R6 and Canon claim that rolling shutter has been reduced. Cleverly, if the camera is set to Face-only AF and the tracked subject exits the frame, it won't automatically then focus on the background, instead re-focusing on the face when it reenters the scene. The Mark II R6 also offers several new video features like focus breathing correction, a false colour exposure aid, a 3/5 second pre-recording function, CLog3 profile, and a quick control screen just for video.

r/canon on Reddit: Used R6 vs New R6 Mk II
May 9, 2023 -

Hello, I have been an Canon RP shooter for the last year and am considering an upgrade to either the R6 or the R6 mk ii. Reasons for upgrading would be, IBIS, longer battery life, more comfortable form factor, dual card slots, and better dynamic range. I don't currently do much video but like the idea of being able to do video in the future if I choose to. One of the reasons I am considering the original R6 is price. I've noticed that used R6's have dropped in price significantly since the introduction of the Mark II, as expected. Especially in the UK where I am currently living, Park Cameras has a used R6 for £1,559, in "Like New condition." Whereas the R6 MK II is currently retailing for £2,779. Is it worth still considering an original R6 in 2023? Am I missing something?
