Canon R3 or R5 mark II? I wanted to upgrade from my R100. There’s no stores within 2.5 hrs to go look at them in person so I’m looking for advice. They are both on sale for $3999.99 which one is the better option they both seem relatively close on comparison. I do mostly sports and family portraits and children! My main lens will be a RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. Just looking for some advice before I purchase later on tonight(online). Thanks!

As a very recently retired Sports photographer, the R3 worked for me considerably better than the R5II. But then I carried 2xR3's and 2xR7's and a variety of glass from 16mm to 800mm depending on the need. My workhorse glass was a 300mm 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8, these stayed on the R3, the R7 would have the 16mm and a second 300/2.8 for wide shots and extra reach. In my bag I would always have a 24-105 F4 and a fast 85. For motorsport I would add the 600 and 800 to the bag too. R3 AF is insanely good and speed of operation is blistering - I get the pre-capture on the R5, but I am not a spray and pray photographer - small bursts are one thing, but hundreds of images that vary by milliseconds will piss my editor off like you would not believe. 24MP files sizes are way easier to deal with than the 45MP R5 - again my editor would reject the huge images and insist that I shoot in 24MP JPEG so that she can easily deal with them. The battery life comparison is not even slightly close - I can easily get 2k shots from the R3 and I had a stack left from my 1DX days. The R7 struggles beyond a few hundred. Ergonomics are not even close, the R3 is perfection, the R5 needs the added grip and even then it creaks slightly and does not feel integrated. Add in weather sealing, build quality and design for purpose and the R3 wins and it's not even close. For family stuff the R3 is massive overkill - its big and heavy and chunky and you will not carry it all the time, coming from the R100, it is hard to explain just how big and heavy the R3 is. For family stuff I use my R7 and often borrow my daughter's R10 - so much smaller and lighter. Pair it with a 16 or 24mm pancake and you have a brilliant pocketable camera that you can get impossibly good results from, or you can stick in P or A+ mode and hand to non-camera savvy people to get great results. Additionally do not forget that the R100 is a crop sensor camera, the R5 and R3 are Full frame, the 24-70 is suddenly going to feel a heck of a lot shorter, so you are giving up a lot of reach. It's a lovely lens, but on the R3/R5 its a wide to low-power tele, on the R100/R10/R7 it is a wide-ish to portraits and a little beyond. R100 -> R5 is a massive jump.

IMO, the only advantage for the R3 is a weather sealed pro body with great ergonomics. I had the 1D Mk3 many years ago and as far as ergonomics go it was the best camera I've ever had. The R5 Mk II autofocus is on par with the R3, it also has pre-capture, which the R3 does not have. If you shoot sports, pre-capture is a game changer allowing you to capture moments you'd be very lucky to get shots of without it. Also, 45MP doesn't hurt. P.S. June 30, 2025 - As I mentioned before, I am not a big fan of mixed memory card slots, especially when one of the card slots is a slower SD slot. Canon created the Canon R5 Mark II with a mix of a CFexpress slot and a SD slot (much like the older Canon R3). With that said, it is nice to travel with a single memory card reader which has both CFexpress and SD slots.

J'ai passé les deux dernières années à shooter des événements sportifs avec deux R3 et deux R7 en secours / pour plus de portée. J'ai eu un R5 mk1 perso pendant un moment, mais même avec une poignée d'alimentation, je trouvais que c'était pas vraiment top pour le sport. Bien sûr, l'autonomie était bonne, mais j'ai des LP-E4 à gogo de mes jours 1Dnn et ils sont super rapides à changer et durent une éternité dans le R3, j'ai aussi des cartes CF express à gogo. Les cartes SD de secours, j'en ai aussi à gogo. La rapidité d'utilisation du R3 est incroyable et l'AF est hallucinant. Je ne rate pas une seule photo. Certaines, je les prends sans réfléchir. Si vous avez déjà utilisé un 1D, le R3 est assez familier, le R5 ressemble à un 5D. Rien de mal à ça, mais ce n'est pas familier. Les R7 que j'utilise me donnent des fichiers trop gros. Ça paraît bête, mais 24MP, c'est là où l'industrie en est pour le sport, ma rédactrice pèterait un plomb si je lui envoyais des raws R7, elle voulait des jpgs 6000x4000. Ce que le R3 produit incroyablement bien. Évidemment, si vous voulez recadrer, alors plus de résolution est pratique, mais ma rédactrice me demanderait pourquoi je ne me suis pas rapproché, pourquoi je n'ai pas utilisé un objectif plus gros. Chacun ses goûts. Il y a une place pour une résolution plus élevée et ce n'est généralement pas sur le terrain de sport. Si vous shootez à vos frais, en utilisant vos propres objectifs, alors je comprends le besoin de recadrage. Mais pour moi, le R3 gagne. C'est pour ça qu'il a été conçu. Peut-être que quand la v2 sortira, il sera surpassé. Mais pour l'instant, lui et le R1 sont les rois.

Salut,
J'ai actuellement un R5 Mark II, et il est génial, et maintenant je cherche un deuxième boîtier. Je pourrais prendre un autre R5 Mark II, mais je pensais prendre un R3 principalement pour ses performances en basse lumière qui pourraient être légèrement meilleures que celles du R5 Mark II.
Si je veux que mon deuxième boîtier ait de bonnes performances en basse lumière, le R3 est-il la solution, ou est-ce que je rate quelque chose, et devrais-je simplement prendre un deuxième R5 Mark II ? La plage dynamique est une bonne mesure pour comparer les performances en matière de bruit, car elle est calculée à partir du rapport signal sur bruit du capteur. En regardant les graphiques de plage dynamique de Photons to Photos , le R3 a effectivement des performances légèrement meilleures en matière de bruit que le R5 Mark II, prenant l'avantage de 0,4 à 0,5 diaphragme à haute sensibilité ISO. À basse sensibilité ISO, les deux ont très peu de bruit, donc la différence n'aura pas d'importance. À haute sensibilité ISO, par exemple, si 12 800 ISO est votre limite confortable avec le R5 II, le R3 serait légèrement meilleur à 16 000 ISO et légèrement moins bon à 20 000. Je ne pense pas que cela fera une aussi grande différence qu'il n'y paraît en pratique, et les performances en matière de bruit du R5 II ne sont pas mauvaises du tout car elles sont conformes à celles d'autres capteurs plein format modernes, le R3 est simplement exceptionnel. Vous pourriez trouver qu'avoir un autre R5 II et deux boîtiers identiques serait beaucoup plus pratique. De plus, investir dans des objectifs à grande ouverture si vous ne les avez pas déjà, comme passer de f/4 à f/2.8 ou de f/1.8 à f/1.2, vous donnerait un bien plus grand coup de pouce en termes de capacités en basse lumière, bien sûr avec une profondeur de champ plus faible. Une idée fausse courante est que les capteurs haute résolution ont intrinsèquement de moins bonnes performances en matière de bruit parce que les pixels individuels du capteur sont plus petits. S'il est vrai que chaque pixel unique du capteur 45 MP du R5 II montrera plus de bruit que ceux d'un capteur 24 MP, cela est compensé par la résolution plus élevée qui rend le bruit des pixels individuels moins visible. Ce n'est que si vous utilisez la résolution plus élevée pour recadrer plus que vous ne le feriez avec un capteur à résolution inférieure que le bruit semble pire, et c'est pourquoi le zoom à 100 % sur un écran est une cause typique de cette idée fausse.

So as the title says I'm struggling between picking the R3 vs R5 mark ii and the R6 mark ii. I really like the preshooting features of the R5 mii and its video capabilities along with the 45 megapixel sensor. I mainly do sports but I have been doing more portraits and landscape so the R5 seems better suited for that than the R3. I am considering the R6 mark ii simply because it's half the price. I think the extra price for the R3 or R5mii would be worth it but I wanted to get some more opinions. I currently shoot on an 80d but I do want to upgrade to mirrorless. Is it worth it saving up for the R3 or the R5 mii because I don't want to be in the future regretting not waiting a little to buy a nicer camera?
The other thing is, is that I want to buy the camera new most likely as I've never bought one new and I think it would be a fun experience to unbox one new at least once.

All else being equal I would rather get a R6ii and another lens. Glass is more important once you reach a certain level

I'd go with an R5 original but it seems you want the experience of unboxing a new camera. If you get from Canon refurb store, you pretty much get that experience. Or someone who's selling a well cared for one on eBay. If you shop Japan stores on eBay they usually offer some new condition used stuff w/ original packaging. But in terms of the three you list, if you can swing it, go for R5 Mark II. But it's obviously a lot of money. those three options are all really nice. i'd feel a lot nicer though with $3,000 extra in my pocket for extra glass. much more important than an incremental bump in IQ no one is ever going to notice.
