You're talking about C-log3 and LUTs but your sample shows 100% 8k footage as if it is about resolution/clarity which is not really what we began with. First of all, have you tried using the official LUT provided by canon for C-log3? Have you tried shooting c-log with view assist on? For your 2nd issue regarding resolution you need to provide more information - What lenses are you using? What are your exposure settings? Are you looking at proxy footage by accident? What does the footage look like before and after LUT application? Which compression method did you use? Answer from solid_rage on reddit.com

If you shoot Log on the Canon EOS R5, you should shoot C-Log3. Here's why.: DPReview | Photography News, Gear Reviews & Community
April 7, 2021 - Canon Log 3 offers a little more dynamic range than Canon Log, but it's also less prone to clogged-up shadows and is more readily compatible with the LUTs designed for Canon's Cinema EOS cameras.

r/CanonR5 on Reddit: Having a very difficult time getting C-Log3 (R5C) footage to look even remotely decent. What could I be doing wrong?
February 14, 2023 -

Hi Canon R5 users! I've been playing with my R5C trying to get a decent-looking video. For some reason, no matter what I do the video looks washed out. I've tried hundreds of LUTs and watched countless YouTube videos. They all just seem to select a LUT in Premier Pro or Divinci Resolve, and their footage magically looks fantastic. I'm doing the exact same thing but it looks terrible and no amount of LUT applying or post-processing seems capable of saving it.

Is it possible that I'm overexposing the footage? I've been using false color to try to get proper exposure, but maybe this acts differently with C-Log3? Does anyone have any tips or advice?

Here's a screen grab, with a LUT applied that at least makes it looks slightly cinematic instead of purely terrible, though it's still pretty terrible! Probably near 100% at 8k: https://i.imgur.com/C2BU4eC.jpg

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

r/CanonR5 on Reddit: C-Log 3 & ISO
September 19, 2022 -

I’m a bit confused how ISO works with C-Log 3 on the R5. Can I shoot at a high ISO like 6400 or do I need to stay lower for it to work best?

On the camera it has L(100), L(200) and L(400) listed in the ISO menu. Does that mean it is best for me to only use those?

Thanks in advance!

hey u/dice7 - just wanted to let you know u/zrgardne is completely wrong. ISO 800 and whatnot are base ISOs for the most dynamic range not the least amount of noise. It is not just "doing math on the values". idk where he got that from but it's totally false. the manual itself specifically states: Noise can also be reduced by recording at ISO speeds lower than ISO 400 for Canon Log or ISO 800 for Canon Log 3, although dynamic range is narrower. meaning, you can reduce the ISO values below 800 and 400 for less noise but at the cost of less dynamic range. which makes perfect sense considering there is a lot of evidence clog modes work similar to HTP where the lows and mids are lifted before 10-bit conversion to increase DR. https://cam.start.canon/en/C003/manual/html/UG-03_Shooting-2_0080.html https://magiclantern.fandom.com/wiki/ISO

Stick to 800 and 3200 for the best dynamic range, if you have to go higher than 1280 I recommend just bumping up to 3200. If you magnify zoom while you scroll through the different ISOs you actually see the noise and how the pattern changes when you get to 3200. If you absolutely have to go higher than 3200, I recommend turning off CLOG and using the classic Prolost Flat settings as defined by Vincent Laforet for the 5Dmarkiii. I try not to shoot below 800 iso because I don't like how the highlight roll off suffers. I saw another user mention that the lower isos are obviously less noisey but I don't like the trade off. I would just recommend that you use the Waveform and make sure you overexpose by .5 to 1 stop, then in post when you pull the exposure down a bit it brings out the cameras natural colours. Just make sure you don't clip anything important.

April 12, 2024 - Are you using the Canon conversion LUTs or Resolve CST to convert to rec709? The red shift you are seeing in the r5 with Clog3, I and other users experienced. I believe there is a problem in the Cinema Gammut in the R5. As I demonstrate here ... I get much better results with Clog3 tone curve and Rec709 Gammut. ... Thanks for the reply its appreciated ! i did test with higher exposure it seem it removed most of the noise in my test i did with 3.2f instead of 5.4 so i assume the iso at 3200 would work also since i let more light in.

EOS R5 choice of shooting in CLog or in a normal picture style under indoor or nighttime conditions
January 4, 2025 - we were advised to shoot the particular Cinema Camera, an PXW FS-5 in a picture profile rather than in slog ( in low light conditions ) because that particular cinema camera had a sensor that was not particularly sensitive to light but the Canon EOS R5 and R seem to do Okay at iso 800 and maybe iso 1000. but given that i would colour grade the footage anyway even if it were shot in a normal ( standard ) picture style, i was wondering whether i would get better results in a normal picture style as log usually has a gamma curve that requires more light in order to hold the highlights which may be absent in darker, indoor or artificial lighting conditions

I’m not sure why people are bashing cinema gamut. You get more dynamic range and greater flexibility with colors. As far as doing any color or lighting adjustments, don’t use color space transform, that will degrade the overall quality of the colors, similar to using luts You want to use color management. You need to activate it by going to the project settings>color management > under “color science” dropdown choose “DaVinci YRGB color managed”, next deselecte automatic color management, next under “color processing mode” drop down select “HDR DaVinci wide gamut intermediate”, finally select the output color space as Rec709.A for apple and Rec709 Gamma 2.4 for windows. I know that’s a lot but you can save it as a preset and default. The last step is to go to your media tab and then select all of the clips captured under a certain profile and right click to show the options and go to “input color space” then select “canon cinema gamut canon Log3” It will automatically convert all selected clips to roughly the same colors that your viewfinder had if you have the viewfinder assist on in your camera. You can now go to the color tab and make adjustments to color and lighting. The advantage of this is you don’t have to download any luts, you don’t have to apply any luts directly onto log footage, and if you are using different profile, like either clog3 in BT2020 or Rec709 all you have to do is select those clips and then select that option in the “input color space” option. This is extremely handy for if you’re working especially with different brand cameras like Sony. You can very quickly convert SLog3 footage to Rec709 and CLog3 to Rec709 and the colors will be consistent across both camera’s footage

Im no expert and just a hobbyist so please these are no facts. What color space do you use in camera, im asking because you didnt mention it. So, the fastest workflow I found was: Record in Cinema Gammut / Clog3 on the R5 Download the conversion lut pack from the official Canon support website (under R5, software) Chose the right LUT according to the file name: eg: "CinemaGamut_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_17_FF_Ver.2.0.cube" or chose any other LUT depending on your in-camera color settings hope this helps a little
